I've often wondered the same thing for a lot of cars. Books about Dinos would likely be the best source right now.

Perhaps someone is aware of studies that have been conducted over the years using original production, current registrations, owners' club registers, and insurance coverage data, etc. to develop tables or a mathematical/statistical formula to arrive at a first "ballpark" guess.

If anyone has seen such studies, please chime in. I'm sure the methodology could be made to apply to all sorts of other collectibles, and vice versa.

I don't know the answer but I would say it might be more today than it has been in 30 years. The rise in prices has saved some from being parting out and justified the restoration of some others to bring them back to driveable condition.

An update based on a stab at Hagerty data and an obscure 2014 FChat thread (mostly):

While Hagerty doesn't offer an exact count, discussions among Ferrari enthusiasts and experts suggest a relatively high survival rate for the Dino 246:

    * Some estimates indicate that around 3,300 to 3,500 Dinos may still exist today

    * This represents approximately 85% of the original production, which is considered remarkably high for a sports car of its era

I would imagine Matthias and Marcel through their research know more about how many Dinos are left than anyone.

87 cars (2,1%) of total 206/246 GT/GTS production are confirmed lost
751 cars (18,4%) of total 206/246 GT/GTS production have no sign of live after 1989 - approx. half of them have been confirmed still around in the 1980s - the other half no ownership history at all or just first owner

I would thing out the 751 cars 2/3 should be still alive ...

my estmate would be not more than 350 to 400 cars lost - so less than 10%

This "car", photographed two year ago, I believe hadn't been on the road since the 1980s. Now restored, I'm told, although I haven't seen it myself.

Do you know the chassis number for that car Jonathan? I'm curious to see if it is #05596 as it was in a very poor condition when auctioned at Silverstone back in 2014 and needed a complete replacement front end due to severe corrosion after being left to effectively rot for years in Fife.

According to the Denny Schue website, 2487 246GT Coupes were built + 1274 246GTS Spyders were built = 3748 total production. With rust, crashes, time etc, wouldn’t there be much less than 3700 cars left?

Sooo….only 367 Dino’s lost? I would have imagined much fewer being left.

Iain, no, not 05596. I don't have anything on 05596 since the 2014 auction but it was sold so presumably has been or is being restored.

    Matthias,

We have spent many years talking about all of this non-sense, well before you published THE MOST AWESOME DINO COMPENDIUM.

All of this has been off public postings.

One thing that amazes me, is the HUGE number of Dino’s that have NEVER had a record recorded.

I know you are “guesstimating”, but there are SO MANY Dino’s that have NEVER surfaced since original purchase…..

I am not generally optimistic, BUT a generally optimistic when it comes to saving Dino’s.

This makes me think from the late 70’s to mid 80’s, LOTS of Dino’s were lost.

Also, easier to track today than years past…..
