I'm a big plane and helicopter fan but never had the funds to pursue the license and own a plane. I got out of college last year and paid for it myself so pushed the fun part a couple years. I have flown many times with friends and had a couple instructions with helicopter so a very base knowledge is there but thinking about pursuing it this year and stumbled across this little guy.

Has anyone heard of it and know any Infos? Price, where to get and how is it to fly?? I wonder if this would be a good one to start on and easy usability.

Looks pretty much like a standard Bede BD-5J to me. Not sure if you can still buy the kits or not.

Also, no disrespect, wouldn't it be wise if no licence yet to start with something tad slower and more forgiving and 2 seats with instructor next to you..

That for sure but I'm thinking when I have logged hours and have the license. Do the Cessna 172 for a while and then switch to something like this

Saw this at AirVenture in 2013. Its seems to be a refresh of the BD-5J. As I recall the pilot was a Navy fighter pilot.

BD-5J? Coming out of a 172? Can I be your life insurance beneficiary?

Would be just like the Blue Angel they let fly a Fokker Dr.I replica. He put it into the trees about 3 minutes after take-off. The same thing would have likely happened if they put the Triplane pilot into an F/A-18. Not the same things and different skill sets.

    Here you go:

Started out as a prop pusher 50 years ago with a snowmobile engine.

Jet added later - 30 years ago.

Was in a Bond movie 30 years ago or so.

I had an opportunity back around 1974 to sit in one of the prototype BD-5Js at a place near MacArthur Airport on Long Island that had supposedly been licensed to build the engine. Corkey Fornoff had flown the airplane in and was there to answer questions. Of course the whole engine deal went up in smoke before any production ones were built.

The thing I remember was that this was an airplane that you put on rather than got in. I'm only 5'9" and even without a helmet there was almost no clearance between my head and the canopy. And the sidestick controller was a must because there would have been no room to operate a conventional stick!
