I don't think you can unless you publish it but even then it probably comes out to about 25 cents an hour, if that. The only real motivation is for expanding the knowledge and preserving the history of the cars. All of the registries that have ever amounted to anything were a collabrative effort including Hillary Raab and Mathais Urbans books which are the 2 bibles so far produced. No one person can get it done, not when we have cars squirreled away all over the globe. In my research I have about 4800 328's out of the 7400 or so made and about 2100 of the 2200 308GTS/Bi's and that has required help and input from others.
I have open invitations from several collectors to photograph a few brand new, delivery mile only cars for the book. Their only motivation is to see that knowledge base I spoke of moved forward and be made more complete. I only even started this project because I was so disappointed in Kieth Bluemels book and felt there needed to be a more accurate, complete and detailed work on the car that not only saved Ferrari from extinction but also made it a household name.

Something to remember about compiling a registry, they are never done. So much information you get will be in error and incomplete. You will be constantly correcting and filling in blanks. Then there is the issue of just finding all the cars. Its one thing to know where all the 250 GTO's are. It's another to find all the 308's. So many have been totalled, crushed and parted out. I emailed a guy on Ebay the other day selling the partial remains of a 328 to get the VIN. He told me when it was declared a salvage and scrapped the numbers were cut off. We will never know which car that one was.

    Good luck with the registry.

Yes Brian you are sooooo correct, I have been filling in blanks since day one and the corrections wow so many, I get one owner telling me one thing and they a previous owner chimes in and says something different. Completing a list of all the 308's I think as you said will be nearly impossible. This is why I concentrated on the QV's that and that is where my interests are. I never counted the #'s I have but I think I will, really would like to know how close I am to the whole lot.

Rifledriver-Thank you for the info. I couldn’t imagine a registry being money making proposition, only a labor of love. Maybe in the future the internet will evolve a way to provide income to people that have unique information to sell, but right now it appears to be moving in the opposite direction. Randy

    Hi Randy,

You can find a picture of your car in the 1990 Ferrari Owners Club yearbook, it was owned back then by R.W. Miles, El Toro, CA/USA.

Could you tell me the current colours please?

    Regards,

    Lars T.

In addition to my previous post above, I´d like to add that I keep a register on all Ferraris (so not just 308 GTS). I´ve worked on it for about 15 years now and approx. 83,000 s/ns are included. It is a private register, so not published anywhere, but I would be more than happy to check if I have any history on cars owned by fellow Ferrarichatters.

For some cars, I will be able to provide some info, for others I will unfortunately have nothing (yet?), so please don´t expect toooo much, ok? If I can provide you with some info on your car, this will be free of any charge, as the register is a labour of love for me. All I ask in return is that you kindly tell me what you know yourself about the history of your car, so that I can update my register with such new info.

I´m still working very hard on my register, adding new info on about 1,000 cars every week. So, if I don´t have any history on your car yet, please check back in a few months time and something new might have been added.

Finally, if you´d like me to check my database for info on your car, please send me a pm, as I will probably not check this thread regularly.

    Best regards

    Lars

Hi Lars, Bob Miles and I were friends from high school and I bought the car from him a week before he died from malignant melanoma. I have only done a few minor things so it looks like it did when he owned it. I drove it when ever I got the chance for over 20 years before I owned it, so making any big changes are not for me. The motor has been rebuilt. It will always be "Bob's Ferrari." I am just taking care of it until his son can afford to buy it.

Lars, I would welcome any information on my carbed 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS #26903

    RED/TAN

    Full Vin Code: F106AS*26903*
    Build Date: Dec.78
    Engine#: F106AE*00986*
    Assembly#: 798A

This car went through a very careful engine out restoration
around the time Symbolic Motors purchased it from Mr. Jose Diaz
of Bruno, CA on Mar. 26th, 2002. The car was sent to Black Horse
Motors, LA. CA for a minor carburetor tune and than was sold by
Symbolic Motors of Beverly Hills to Mr. Tom Ruggieri of NewPort Beach,
CA., owner of Mega Marketing in Santa Anna on April 29th, 2002.
I have been told by at least three people who knew the car that
the restoration is beautifuly documented by still photos and an
envelope full of pictures and records. Please, if anyone knows the
location of these photos and records I would gladly pay you $200 to
    have them in my hands.

Lars, I submit the above registry information on my 1978 Ferrari GTS #26903
ANY information you or others might have on this car would be greatly appreciated.

    Jim

    Hi Randy,

Thanks for the pic and the story, a very special story indeed!
May I just ask you for two more details for my database?
I think the interior is black, is this correct? And in which year did you purchase the car?

    Many thanks & ciao,

    Lars T.

    Hi Jim,

Many thanks for all the info, it's very welcome to my database :)

I can add that also your car is pictured in the 1990 FOC yearbook, it was owned back then by Jerry E. Dahlquist, Santa Rosa, CA/USA

Could you please tell me when you purchased the car and from which seller?

Unfortunately I can't help you with the missing pics of the restoration - good luck in finding them!

    Best regards

After all, I wouldn't want to hijack this thread, which purpose it is to create a register for the 308 GTS. No doubt a good initiative!

    Hi Lars,

Yes, the interior is black with blue carpet, unchanged from the first time I saw the car in 1985 when Bob bought it in Phoenix, AZ. It also had the Borrani wire wheels on it. I bought it from him in April, 2004. I had purchased a Corvette in 1985 and Bob and I played Ferrari and Corvette for almost 20 years. Now I have to play by myself, but he still rides with me.

    Thanks for asking.

That is quite a story. It sounds like what started out as a sad story with the loss of your friend will have a happy ending when his son buys the car. Good on you for doing that.
