I have an Omega, yes I know, the Cadillac of watches, Pierce Brosnan says so.

I could never afford anything really great like a Rolex Daytona but I have a liking for fully automatic watches.

Has anyone seen some good knockoffs?

    I kinda like that comparison...

    Perregaux - Ferrari
    Breitlings - Porsche

    etc.

Breitlings are knocked off regularly now but these watches really look fake! :(

Seriously, there is a whole new line of Swiss Army watches on the market now (the most expensive being $700 retail) and some are very cool.

    Check them out!

Actually there was a yellow faced Omega Speedmaster for which Michael Schumacher advertised. It was available in a special box representing a Bridgestone tire.

If you like a real watch, check out ebay. Once in a great while somebody offers a Cartier Ferrari watch from the eighties. Those are usually genuine.

For really good knock offs of Ferrari Girard Perregaux watches you have to go to Chinatown NY and actually know where to look. There are some street vendors on Canal that have the good stuff. Actually fully automatic - not just Quartz - watches with chronometer functions and all. Very hard to distinguish from the real thing unless you have the watch in hand.

Why do I know? Dont ask...

There have been lots of Omegas that Schumacher has advertised. Here is a site documenting them all.

    When did he say that?

If you want the REAL thing let me know. I can get these pieces at substantially lower than list and there is a very large secondary market for decent to very high end pieces. I'll be happy to help you find what you're looking for...and no, I'm not a watch dealer. Just another expensive hobby!

You know that Omega is the official James Bond watch. That sorta makes things a little too 'hip' and populist if you know what I mean.

If I had a liking for any it would be a Rolex Daytona, maybe the Paul Newman edition for you guys.

You can get a genuine Rolex, used, for about the same price as a good knock-off. The same is true for other brands. Do an internet search for used watches or look on eBay. Just watch out for fakes on ebay.

You know I get a lot of stick from America over fake goods that are available in and from China.

Yes they are all available. Everyday I walk downtown Shanghai I get offered all kinds of things that are fake from watches to Golf clubs, tee shirts and a host of other things. DVD's are available about 3 day after the release of the latest movies all be it bad quality all though you only have to wait about a month for the good stuff to came through.

I have a real Ferrari and a real Ferrari watch they both look and perform well. The car itself cost me an arm and a leg to get into China far above the cost of the car itself. (You love them or you don’t)

I cannot see the advantage of having a very inferior product to drive or wear just to show I have a branded name. You know Toyota and Seiko make excellent products, both work extremely well and are much more reliable if you cannot afford the real thing get the best you can afford. Fakes are fakes and easily sorted from the good stuff.

    Just my opinion

Even though Bentley has adopted Breitling (the new GT has one in the dash), Breitling is most well recently associated (last 50 years) with aviation. I do like the Perregaux, but I really don't know of another watch I'd rather have than the classic Navitimer. So useful.
Although I really liked the old white faced Seiko Pilot watch with the whiz wheel - again, so useful and well made.

    cool discussion.

The thing about fake watches that I always found funny was that someone that was "in the know" enough to recognize a rare watch can spot a fake a mile away. Those that are impressed by fakes have probably never even seen a real one. So, why do you want to get a fake?

If you want a Girard Perregaux, you can get a real one (non-Ferrari) from the 40's-70's for about $100 in stainless steel off Ebay. Get a vintage watch, they're more rare and often classier than the newer ones. And they're as cheap as a "good" fake. Kinda like a very close Countach replica which sells for $40k. Would you spend that much when you can get the real thing for $50k?

Erik, last week I was offered a genuine Chairman Mao watch, which looked really fantastic , I was all most sold except for the waving right hand going tick tock, tick tock, just like the Queen. I managed to keep my money in my pocket.

    See you over the weekend.

I've managed to keep my money in my pocket every time I see those.

But the real question is have you been offered one of the Deng Xiao Ping watches with the diamonds to celebrate his 100th birthday? Or have I been having dinner with the mayor one too many times?

The beer is always cold at my house. Cheers mate.
