Has anyone had any experiences with those dumb radars on the highway. Turns out that someone ;( has got a few of them all through out Europe. France, Germany, Italy and Austria. Was wondering what he should do? A letter from Avis for one of them arrived already stating that he should get in contact with the authorities regarding the matter. Any help would be great!

Not sure about the Germany and Austria but someone I know has been flashed many a times over the years, both in rentals and parents cars - nothing has ever come of it - in the latter case they send my info to the authorities showing residence outside France and it's waived - I assumed due to lack of juridiction. France and Italy might be more lax. If you are pulled over, that's a different story....

In several european countries there is no laws forcing, for exemple an car rental company to leave information about who driving a car at an certain moment ...........

(sorry for lack of proper words in my explanation)

Different companies have different policies regarding this matter, some leave information to the authorities, some don´t

I think it´s value for your time fighting the rental company ..... maybe that someone else was driving the car at that particular moment.

    Good luck

I read in the Sunday Times a few weeks back, about how France and Germany are pushing the EU to have access to dvla records by 2013 ( so European speeding days may be numbered) I think the statistics for French flashes of cameras are something stupid like 65% of all flashes are made by foreign vehicles ( although I suppose it has nothing to do with have the majority of all their cameras on major routes used by foreigners.

Britain was initially keen on the idea as like the rest of Europe, Britain has a major problem with the same issue, especially with eastern European cars avoiding speeding fines and especially parking and congestion charges. Although the article did say that by offering acces of dvla records to other eu members would be a contravention of our civil liberties. So just when you thought that by being a member of the eu may be a good thing by bringing civil rights etc to the table, don't get too excited this government do anything they like and there is nothing we can do about it.

I know it is a while since you posted this but if you have not replied to them yet ask them to offer evidence of who was driving at the time as it is possible one of the passengers was driving at the time and you can not determine who is guilty and a photo should eliminate the innocent. Hopefully they won't have a forward facing shot of you.

I talked to a couple of friends in Europe and was told not to worry about it as they have no jurisdiction for people that do not live in their country.

Hertz charges me 20 euros per flash. After a little while, I decided to buy a Coyote. It's a GPS+GSM interactive radar warning system. I saved the Coyote's purchase cost in a couple of long cross Western Europe trips.

Coyote also offers Android and iPhone's applications.
