Hello, I'm thinking of having a Porsche, and within my low budget I can think about Boxsters (986's or early 987), but I'm seeing the 924/944/968 as a left wing choice. I have no problem working on the cars (it's actually part of the fun for me), but will these three give me any Porsche experience? Or are they just old coupes not worth any attention? Thanks in advance, VPX
“Left wing?” A 944 Turbo S just sold on BaT for big money. They are all the real deal. More so, in my opinion, than the Boxster. Matt
924, no; 944, yes; 968; yes as a car, no as to its styling for me. Buddy has had more Porsches than Kieth Richards has had blackouts and he always loved the 944, but says the 968 is a great car.
Owned a 944S2 - which is a 944 with, effectively, the 968 motor. They are great cars. 968s are starting to rise in price, so now is a good time to get into one, but you can't go wrong with either a '44 or a '68. They're great fun, and reasonably priced. The 924 is more of an acquired taste. The 924S has a 944 motor - so if you're thinking of the 924, that's the one to get.
I’ve had three 944 Turbo’s. Great cars that handle amazing and with an exhaust, wastegate and chip you can really wake those motors up. 89 is the most sought after year, but the 86 model year are the lightest due to no abs, airbags and other things that added weight, plus they have the best wheel offset. I had a 968 cab bought new in 1994, had a few 911s before that. Loved the 968, honestly I think it is still very good looking and also rare. I just saw a posting on another site that had the number of 968 built, more cabs than coupes, but if I recall correctly, I think it was like 2200 total over the few years they built them. Still can get them cheap, but hard to find one in decent condition. Loved that car, it was quick and fun (for the time), and I still think a very good looking car. I traded it for a 1995 355 spider. Regret selling that one as well
But not interior and exterior trim and finishing. Early Boxsters are 996-level crap. It’s a world of difference. Matt
Have owned a 944 for 16 years. Owned an early 2.5 Boxster for 6 years and just moved to a 996 coupe. The 944 is a great car, clean examples really starting to turn heads, turbos rising in value fast, old world solid German build quality, but from a driving perspective the Boxster is hands down the better car. Not even close. The extra two decades of development is very evident. Far less maintenance. Beautiful flat six engine & exhaust note that would blow the socks off a base 944. Hard top option makes it feel like a baby Cayman. With full leather the build quality is nothing to be ashamed of. Reliable and good mpg. Comfortable and refined enough to be an excellent daily driver. Silky smooth power delivery, gear change and ride quality. I've been a huge fan of the 924/944/968 series since I was a young teenager, and would still have a collector quality 951 or 968 over an equivalent 986/987 simply to rarity, but make no mistake the Boxster is the *better* car by a wide margin. That's not to say a crisp low mileage 944 turbo isn't an amazing drive. Still a great car by modern standards.
While I like the 944 & 968 they are from a different generation than the Boxster/Cayman. I think the upgrade in technology is probably worth going to the newer editions of Porsche's entry level cars. Hard to find 944/968 in good condition with all the maintenance done regularly. Also a lot of boxsters/caymans made so moree likely to find one in good condition.
I think a 944 (or better yet, 924S) is a great choice. However, like any vintage car, your goal should be to enjoy it for what it is and the experience it brings you-- if going as fast as possible is what you want, then buy the newest Porsche you can afford. Driving old, vintage cars (I can't believe a 944 is "vintage" but so be it) is a lot of fun. It challenges you a bit as a driver in ways that newer cars don't, and lets you time travel back to the era of the car. Personally, my favorite of that group is the 924S. You get the original lines of the 924 with the vastly superior 944 mechanicals.
I didn’t care for the fit/finish of the 924, seemed like a Scirocco inside. I thought the 944/968 were much better. But honestly I was always pretty much a 930/911 guy. I thought the interior on the 924/944/968 were more cramped or it seemed that way to me so I never ended up buying one. I almost picked up a 928 on two occasions but lost the Guards Red 928 S4 I wanted and never pulled the trigger on a Silver 928 S4. I guess the Silver just wasn’t appealing enough
My brother had an original 924. I thought the interior was pretty nice, actually. Not much of a performer, though. That upside-down tach was cool.
I've had a 944s and a turbo. I liked both cars, but the Boxster is better for performance. A friend of mine had a 944turbo cup car, that thing was a beast, but they are too much money now.
While at the Scottsdale auctions this year Hagerty had a Porsche discussion that talked about the "transaxle cars" and how they are taking off. They are a car that many found desirable when new & now those same people seem to be buying them up. They expected them to trend upwards strongly in the future. I have had several. Had a new '86 (great year like mentioned above), had a '83 that I turned into a super competitive SCCA improved touring racecar, had a '86 turbo that kept me busy, and still have an 1987 944S (16 valve) that I ummm ~ upgraded...
