So, I got the somewhat common "this identity cannot be opened with this version of entourage" error. Strange, given that I have only one identity and have not changed or updated anything in entourage. Anyway, I went to the Apple Genius Bar, and we did a Typical db Rebuild (which failed during compacting) and then an Advanced Rebuild (which was successful and I've saved...although my last backup was probably about 4 weeks ago). But, I still get the same error when I now try to open entourage.

I've been on the web checking out different solutions, but nothing seems to be appropriate. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    CW

With all due respect, the only problem I have ever had comes from MSFT products.

I bought a copy of Office 2008 and upgraded last night. It works, but a few emails didn't make it through. Although, I'm not too happy about having to put more $ in MSFT's pockets.

    +1

If you ignore him, he does eventually go away btw......

So doing this upgrade also upgraded Entourage and "fixed" your identity problem? What version were you running previously?

I realize it's a little late now, but why *must* you run Entourage? [Another buggy, unreliable, non-scalable POS S/W from the evil empire IMO. ;)] - There's plenty of alternatives that don't involve giving M$ any $.....

    Cheers,
    Ian
PS - "A few emails didn't make it thru" also worries me....... Why? Do you know which ones? This scenario makes me more nervous than it not working at all.....

    Must. Not. Make. Snarkey. Reply.

What are you doing in entourage that is prompting the error?
Is this the only system affected? (wait, your a user, not a network, right?)

Are you on a wired, or wireless network?
What OS are you running? Mac OS 10.6.x, MS XP/Vista/7?

I may be able to come up with something as a work around, if needed.
(Im an Apple Sys Admin btw)

Try checking to see if there are any updates from Apple for the software, they have rolled out quite a few updates the last few weeks, and you might be missing one.

You have probably seen this already, but I found a link that is about as useful as MS can be in regards to Mac.

I'm running Mac OS X v. 10.4.11 on a 1.5GHz 15" G4 Powerbook. Software is Office for Mac X ('02, maybe?). The Genius called it "vintage", and he's right. Once I get a system stable and reliable, I don't mess with it. This is a 6-year old computer. And, it's time to upgrade, which I'm spec'ing out and price comparing as we type. I will replace it with the latest generation Macbook Pro 15" base model. I'll also be going with Time Capsule for automated (and frequent) backups.

The upgrade to Office '08 did work, but there *may* have been some corruption of the db, as emails from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday Morning's db crash didn't appear. Not awful, and I can live with it. I'm considering asking my email hoster to recover the period and send them, but, honestly, I don't think I lost anything too important.

Do I need Entourage? Well, not really. I only bought Office because my industry (finance) uses Excel as the de facto standard spreadsheet. I've looked at iWork, but I'm not sure the spreadsheet is up to par. And, I'd have to wonder if spreadsheets I've done on it or received from those using Excel would fully translate. But, I have no allegiance to Entourage (or Word or PowerPoint for that matter).

Well, I didn't do anything, actually, other than try to send an email with an attached .jpg. Entourage shut down and wouldn't re-open, giving me the error message. It is the only application affected, though. And, correct, I'm only a user.

I'm on a wireless network (DSL w/ Netgear wireless router).

I did run all the software updates.

Indeed. Rightly or wrongly, the G4/G5 platforms are now pretty much "unsupported" unfortunately. But hey, you got a good solid 6 years out of a laptop...... [Incidentally, I "retired" my G4 powerbook to the family room and added a guest account and it's used a *lot*, both by me and anyone close by - It's great as I don't have to worry about "stupid" users - It's rock solid and >8 years old now.... I'd also recommend updating it to 10.5 btw.]

Very good! [Although, if you already have a "good" wi-fi router a simple H/D (preferably F/W) will also serve as a nice TM backup drive - Just a thought.]

May I suggest a quick download of "Neooffice"? - It's an (obviously free) OSX version of Openoffice that will probably work for you - And if it doesn't, no big deal......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Damn it Ian, you stole my answer.

I was going to suggest ditching Office, for Open Office.

It will run a lot smoother on a Legacy System.

I use a 10.5.8 13" MBP at home, through my TV as its screen is missing.
Using a Legacy System is always fun. Knowing that help is harder to find.

Good thing the Mac community is always helpful.

The new Macbook is purchased and should be in my hands in a couple of days. Heck of a deal.

    Base model 15" Macbook Pro (2.4GHz, 4GB, 320GB)
    Applecare for 3 years
Pre-installed latest version of Office for Mac
    1TB Time Capsule

    Total?

    $2,026.00

No tax and no shipping. Just amazing what a few minutes on ebay can save you!

Thanks, again, guys, for all the help.
