somebody gave this to me years ago, i was wondering if its worth anything, as you can see its a model of a B17 made from wood, under one of the cowlings its got a small tag with the name of the builder and a build date of Apr 1942, its very detailed, from the little men inside to the rivits on the outside, if you hook up an air pump to it the props spin, the gear also retracts, im pretty sure it was built from a kit, its in excellent condition considering its age, wing span of about 4 ft

    any ideas?

Judging by the lack of a chin turret, it looks like a B-17F model. Definately unique because most model planes that were actually built way back then were much smaller. Perhaps it was built for some sort of techinal training session or official display of some kind. Are you sure that it was built in 1942, or does the tag indicate that it is a model of a "1942 B-17"? Either way, definately unique.

Also, your coffee table looks like it was last cleaned in 1942!

after i looked at the pics, i knew somebody was going to comment on my dirty coffie table :)

definetly built in 1942, the label says built by L.E. Church Arp 1942, it was built by a friends grandfather during the war, its amazing it has survived all these years, the reason is, it came with a big wooden case that its been stored in, its just been sitting in a closet for the last 65 years, it also came with a letter stating if it is no longer wanted it is to be donated to an aircraft museum somewhere back east

Thats really cool, I would assume it has historical value as well

Interesting something like this would be made in the early days of WW2 as the US was still getting its butt kicked by the Japanese and the paranoia during that time about everything, would have seemed the builder took a risk of being arrested for spying or war crimes of our latest top secret weapon the B17

The museum probably doesn't even exist anymore. However, the Horsefly Institute would gladly accept it as a donation to historical preservation! Somewhere in my archives, I have a small bracket that came off a B-17 that crashed here in Arkansas in 1943. After poking around in the dirt at the crash site back in the 70s, I found a few small pieces and have it in a jar somewhere in all my stuff. I also picked up an original B-17 flight manual at the flea market last year.
I try to latch onto any unique items for my collection of stuff. How about 2 WWII vintage practice bombs? I picked up a pair of those at the flea market about 2 years ago. They are the hollow shells of 250 pound bombs as were used in WWII on many aircraft. I remember the day that I bought them. I made sure that I had the receipt as I drove away from the flea market. In this day and time, it's not too politically correct to have a pair of 250 pound bombs rolling around in the bed of your pick-up truck!

If you plan on letting go of that wooden B-17, keep me in mind.

Building model aircrafts is what iam all about mainly modren fighter interceptors my speciallitly and personal favorite the F-15 Eagle.

Iv'e built so far a couple of other ones ranging from an F-16C, F-117, custom one off Northrop YF-23 to an SU-34.

I also build aircrafts in which aren't real but from video games, anime or just something out of the blue. As far as that goes iv'e built the Vic Viper from the video game "Gradius"

    here it is hopefully.

I know i didn't do a great job with them but i did run out of money on the project thinking that 150bucks would finish it but it didn't so i had to improvise alittle.

My current project is the VF-1 Vertech from Macross which iam doing out of an F-14 Tomcat, my goal with the project is to make it as realistic as possible by using vertech parts on a tomcat.

Also Iam building 100F-15 eagles models, LV-eric had a goal of owning 10 lambos which inspired me to do this. I got one down and 99 to go.
