I stopped into the Auto Gallery in Calabasas and they had not one but two 430s there. The one in the show room was yellow, and the other was red. I don't know if the red one was for sale because it was being detailed outside. Anyway you may want to give them a call.

If the supply/demand is so different and would command such a high premium, why dont Ferrari charge more for the cars in the US?

Out of interest, what's new list price for a standard US 430?

Very true. And if they can't get it to you within the month, use part (or most) of that 300k to buy a 612 or a 575 they have sitting in the showroom (at full list), and I can pretty much assure you that you'll have your 430 within the year.

Sounds like its basically a money, thing, if I want to pay double I can get one ASAP, but otherwise I am out of luck. I think I'll do the smart thing and look at a 360 for now, and wait a few years to pick up a used 430.

Horsmanp, problem with that strategy is that in a few years you will be in the exact same position. That is the 430 replacement will be out and of course you will want the latest and greatest that is available. What do you do then??? This whole Ferrari thing is Messed up!!! I think it is worse than a crack pipe!!! I wish i would of never got started.

Response from Ferrari of North America:

    Dear Mr. Horsman,

Thank you for your interest in the F430. Ferrari North America is the importer and distributor of Ferrari vehicles for North America and we only sell vehicles to our dealers.

Unfortunately, demand has exceeded supply for our vehicles for several years. I would suggest that you contact 1 of the 4 New York metro dealers and develop a relationship.

    Subject: 430 Wait List

I am interested in getting on the waiting list for a 430, most of the dealers I called are telling me five years… Can I do any better going direct to you? What is the best process?

Are there any dealers you can recommend in the US that have shorter lists?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Then at least your taking a bit less deprecation hit on each purchase... But I do agree, I am a technology lover / early adopter, and I love the latest greatest...

I think the issue for a dealer is he doesn't have enough inventory. He certainly can't survive on his allocation of new Ferraris, he really needs the supply of lightly used Ferraris to resell on consignment. Ideally, he would be able to sell each new car 4 or 5 times. I think that's the only way a dealer can get enough inventory to stay in business and turn a profit.

So a friend of the dealer would be someone who would first let the dealer sell his Ferrari on consignment, and make the 7% commission. Then buy a new replacement at sticker, and let the dealer sell that one a little ways down the road. Repeat the cycle, etc. The dealer gets to make the markup on the used cars, and you get to drive a new Ferrari at sticker.

Seems like if you were willing to keep your cars less than a year and keep the miles low, this would work. I met one person who is doing this very thing and will have his new 430 shortly.

Much of what I read here is speculation or second hand info.

Different dealers handle the situation differently. Evidently some only sell to established customers first, others are first come, first serve. I suspect many are a mix of both. Some say they will put you on a list, but not take a deposit. No deposit, no contract, you won't get a car unless the market collapses. Some take 5K others 10K. Ours is 10K which is refundable at any time until you spec out the car, then non refundable.

If you want to get a new car eventually, I would call or visit the four dealers FNA suggests and ask them point blank how they handle the situation. Tell them you know you need patience and just want to get in line, even if it is for a 430 replacement. If someone will give you a contract, do it. It's an option to buy. Let them know that you would be willing to take a 430 if one becomes available at the end of production. Speculators make back out on the last 430's if there is no money to be made.

My comments are straight from a dealer. Granted, not every dealer handles it the same way.

You mean kindof like this? ^^^^^ ;)

It'd be great to be on the F short list as you can pretty much be driving the latest Ferrari for free. Providing you're buying and selling through one particular dealer. If your set on having the latest and greatest then it may be worth it to do/buy what they tell you and get on the "short list." My guess is it'd cost you $150K+ to do so i.e. buying a 575 that you don't really want or whatever and then taking a hit on it. Is it worth it, that's for the individual to decide.

Personally I think the smart thing is be patient and wait for the right thing to come along.

    "... and develop a relationship."

It seems to me that in the FNA letter you find an honest, direct and simple answer. I've never understood why people struggle with the new car allocation issue, it's not that mysterious: "develop a relationship." Voila.

More direct evidence why 360 prices will NOT drop as quickly as lots of people seem to think. Demand, +1, supply, +0. :)

I was told last month if I put money down now, I could get a car December 2006 from Ferrari of Shanghai.

I'm happy with my old slow 308 at 1/10th the price...

Some guy listed 3 for sale in the LA Times today. Red, yellow and black. He's out of Dallas. I'm sure if you check cars.com you'll see them listed there. I'll bet in a year they'll be more like $25K over. That's just a guess but it's better then getting bent over to get on a short list. On the other hand it looks like you can get one now if you want to plunk down $275 - 285K.

#4547684131 is the car that Jim Lyons has for sale in San Diego

He does not list cars he does not have.

So, you can go there and see the car
