My grandfather use to smoke a pipe. Loved the smell of his tobacco. Whats a good tobacco and any others here enjoy a pipe from time to time?

I used to smoke a pipe back in the day when I was in school. I loaded the bowl with cherry cavandish. It was a nice diversion while studying and the transmucosal absorption of the nicotine was a mild stimulant and helped me study for 6 hours at a time. The thought of the unfiltered smoke constantly bathing the side of my tongue has dissuaded me from continuing. I really don't want to lose my tongue to cancer.

Try Mcclelland Dark Star, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, and GL Pease Cumberland. For sweet aromatics, find a good tobacconist and put together a cavendish blend of your own.

Even Original Captain Black is a good place to start.

If you are looking for a good Italian or English pipe, try neatpipes.org, or cupojoescom (which is located just up the road from me.)

Overall Engish tobaccos are very strong, try Peterson special reserve, the 2012 edition is not released yet, but If you find a can of 2006 special reserve let me know it is amazing. Try this web sit. Castello pipes are the best.

Funny, I've always wanted a Castello Greatline but have never gotten around to getting one. I think my favourites are my three Ser Jacopos, but I really like my Dunhill Cumberland, too.

I have quality Danhill pipes too, but once you try Castello you never go back to Dunhill or Ashton again. Sark

Most, if not all, tobacco pipes have filter systems. Perhaps your filter wasn't in place.

I had an Ashton that I gave away: a disappointment.

I will grant you that English and Italian pipes are worlds apart. Size-wise, Italian pipes start where English pipes leave off: they are just huge. The scandinavians are in between.

I can't knock the Dunhill: it just smokes so cool all the way down. Plus, the grain, the bore, and the fit of the stem are perfect.

That said, all of my Italian pipes are more beautiful. From my One-Note Don Carlos all the way up to my Ser Jacopo Delicta Diamante, they just feel wonderful in the hand and look like sculpture.

Do you by any chance have a Svend Bang? The only scandinavian pipe I have is a Nörding "Erik The Red." I'd love to have one, but won't spend more than $1k on a pipe.

    No, actually.

The only decent pipes that I'm aware of that employ a filter system are Savinelli.

    I stand corrected.
The last time I smoked a pipe was 20 years ago!
