Am seriously considering trading in my 2014 Spider for a new Speciale. Has anyone who has made this move regretted giving up the open air experience? As I live in Southwest Florida and drive with the top down 95% of the time I'm concerned that the Speciale advantages might not make up for the open top. An allocation for a Speciale A does not seem to be in the cards. Thanks.

I did not own a Spider, but from your words I take it won't make any sense for you. If you are not a frequent track user the Spider will suit your needs much better. If I lived in Florida I would as well have a Spider ;)

The Speciale is a hardcore purpose built track car that has tremendous flexibility in terms of drivability on the street(I have owned both the Speciale and the 458 Spider). If you plan on driving the Speciale daily I would advise you to stick with the Spider. The Speciale is a brilliant car but will not replace the civility of the Spider. If on the other hand you are wanting to experience race car performance that will leave your mouth dry every time(depending on your driving style) the Speciale is your car.

Thanks for sharing your experience with both. I drive the Spider a couple of times per week and am looking for more performance. I love the open air experience but, miss the more hardcore performance of my 600+hp moded R8 Spyder. The Speciale A would be my ideal choice but, I believe that the performance and handling of the Speciale would outweigh my loss of enjoyment of the Spider.

I went from an Italia, to a Spider, to a Speciale. Each was obviously different, but very enjoyable in their own unique ways. I never had a convertible before, so wasn't sure how much I would like it. Immediately on my first drive, I found I really liked the open air experience. It was more about an overall feeling rather than just performance. However, on having an opportunity for a Speciale, I had to take it because the aesthetics and performance outweighed the open top. I don't regret giving up the spider at all. At the same, I can see a convertible again in my future. Bottom line for me is that they are all great cars and I have enjoyed each with no regrets for what I might have given up.

If you drive with the top down that much i suggest you keep the spider, get the ferrari sports exhaust. You will have a more aggressive car without having to give up your roof.

None!!!! The spider was and is an awesome car but I have no regrets moving to the speciale... It's the best sports car I have ever owned but I do have a turbo s cab for my topless fix... Just buy a c7 cab or something for those sunny day cruises and your set. :)

If you live in Florida and drive the top down 95% of the time then I would suggest you to either keep your spider or upgrade to Speciale Aperta. As mentioned by other members that if you track your car then go for Speciale but if you do a lot of crushing then you may enjoy your the Spider more. That's all folks……..

The Speciale is just hype, not really special, just a marketing ploy.
The Spider is a much better driving experience for all the sunny days spent driving in the sunshine state.

No, just no. It is as different as a similar looking thing can be. If you want wind in the hair stay with Spider, if you want your hair on fire..

Having owned a spider for some time and driven a Speciale and having a Speciale A coming next year, I'd say your comment is nonsense. I love open topped cars but I found the Speciale just a little bit better in every department - enough to make a big difference overall. If your perspective is simply as a sunshine state boulevard cruiser - I can understand your view.

The Speciale is not hype. Anyone who has driven one(I refer to the Autocar review as a good reference)will tell you it is an outrageous piece of automotive machinery. I have spent 1300 miles in the seat of one and it is the most thrilling ride I have ever experienced(including the F40 which is my all time favorite Ferrari). I personally(having had two 458 coupes and a Spider) would choose the Speciale over the 458 Spider. The Spider is an elegant civilized world class sports car(suitable for daily driving), the Speciale is a race car slightly tamed for the road. For me the Speciale is a car to be driven at dawn on Sunday mornings through the canyons of Southern California(only after a double expresso) to sharpen the reflexes and quicken the pace.

Hype? Wow... hopefully you've driven it and have made that observation... but if you haven't then... well just wow.

Definitely Not a "HYPE", I drove 458 coupe, spider, speciale then I know Speciale is very special …. Drive it then you know what the word "Speciale" really mean.

So you're keeping it after all? Great! Maybe I missed something, but the last I heard it was for sale at Ferrari of San Diego.

I'm going from a 2012 spider to a 2015 Aperta. Having driven the Speciale, I just love it's all around improvement over the regular 458 and I'm sure the Aperta will be just as good. My build is in May and so glad I could get the open top.

Congrats! An Aperta doesn't seem to be in the cards for me.
