I've had good luck with some cars, removing the visor and roughing up the shaft with some coarse sand paper. Run the sandpaper lengthwise down the shaft to create lines that run perpendicular to the visor movement.

Although on my 308 I have yet to dtermine how to get the visor off of the shaft.

I have the same problem with my 04. Dealer is replacing it. In the meantime I am using the old coat hanger and electrical tape trick. :)

You do not have to replace the visor. the hinge on the right side has a tendency to break in half inside the visor. You can purchace just the hinge and I do not believe it is expensive. not too hard to replace either, worst part is removing the broken piece from the visor. I have repaired three myself.

check with your dealer. If they cannot find, e-mail me and I will get you the part number and cost.

    best regards, Jim

Ok, I give. How do you get the visor off of the rod without tearing the electrical wire for the mirror? Can you post the part number and cost?

the new part comes with the new wiring. you have to remove the visor and unplug it from the roof harness, then you remove the visor mirror and unplug the wiring and remove the wire harness and remaining damaged hinge. you then feed in the new harness and follow with the new hinge.
plug in the harness to the visor mirror and reinstall.

I will get the part number tomorrow and post.

    best regards, Jim

Thanks for the info on the sun visor. I ordered the part and got my fixed. Dealer didn't know that you can order just the hinge. But now they do. Hope they pass on the info to other customers so they don't order a new visor just because the hinge is flopping. Anyway Thanks Again.

The dealer has the parts book and he didn't know this?

No wonder the dealer parts business is so good!

I'm going to go with some black electrical tape around the bar that the visor snaps into. Should do the trick.

I think the hinge is only about $90.00 and it will look original.

    Thx for the info!
Didn't complain too much since they replaced one under warranty.

Will be great to have the fix/part number in case it fails off warranty.

Hey Jim, good to see you here (since I don't get to see you in person any more). Did you just come up with this one, or is there another reason you never did this on mine! :D My '01 550's passenger visor's been falling down since '03 now, and I'm actually worried the driver's side is getting a little loose!

I moved the car to CA for now, otherwise I'd just come and have you do it (but it'd be a long drive, and besides I'm in France now and spend most of my time in Argentina... so it'd be even harder...)

Well my passenger visor has this problem and I have the replacement piece thanks to Ricambi and this thread :)

However, I cannot seem to get the broken part out. Any tricks?

    Thanks,

I just replaced one this week. I used a 5/16 drill bit to break up the inner plastic piece. You have to be care not to catch the leather. There is a flat metal spring inside the hole so when it alaigns with the flat on the plastic hinge, it holds it in place. I used a very very light coat of grease on the plastic part that slips inside the visor. Worked great.

The fix pieces are pretty cheap.... but depends on the year/assembly of the car, and whether you need right or left side visor bits.

The plastic hooks in the middle of the windscreen (near the rearview mirror) is 65196000

The parts that ferrarioldman is referring to (above) are:
Passenger side: 65195800 (until assembly 28973)
Passenger side: 65513000 (from assembly 28974)

Drivers side: 65195900 (until assembly 28973)
Drivers side: 65508000 (from assembly 28974)

I fixed my sun visor by installing the factory replacement part. Not an easy job. I will help anyone do the job and impart my experience. It takes a lot of work and some sewing skills, but it can be done with prior help. Calcutating the hours, if a mechanic did it, $800 for a new one more or less for a new one would not be far off. But with some instruction, you can probably do it in about 4 hours if you can sew and can find the tread to match. I would be happy to give instructions. fred
