I was listening to 'Sinatra At The Sands' and Sammy Davis Jr.'s 'Live At The Coconut Grove' earlier and couldn't get over how great they were.

If you guys haven't heard the album, I cannot give enough praise to the Sands album. Sinatra is backed by Count Basie and his orchestra with a young Quincy Jones providing the arrangements and conducting. I would say it counts as my favorite live album.

The two great Sammy Davis live albums are 'That's All', and the aforementioned Coconut Grove recording. His Frank Sinatra impersonation is just amazing. And there is just no comparison between some performers of that era and some today. During one of Davis's monologues he talks about stars/celebs that just want to be left alone after a show, won't sign autographs, etc. His response is something to the effect of:

"Why would I be bitter? I've never had it this good. I have a pool and I don't even know how to swim."

Sands, eh? I'll have to pick that up.

My favorite Sammy Davis has to be his recording of John Shaft... I'm such a geek!

I like Sinatra, but Mel Torme' can sing him under the table any day of the week.

I've always loved Dean Martin, in a perpetual stated of drunkeness most of the time it seems, or it was just an act.

Beyond the singing, the movies these guys did were awfully entertaining. Maybe not the greatest, but entertaining nonetheless.

Anyone watch the 'Matt Helm' series ?

Slightly OT; I need to find an original 'Route 66' single, by the original artist/singer, Bobby Troup.
Troup was also the E/R doctor in the TV Show 'Emergency' in the early 70's, along with Julie London (Nurse), another great singer, IIRC.

I can get it for you.

And I think there were plenty of singers better than Sinatra, but he delivered on all fronts. Somewhat risky, always the entertainer. Sammy, in my opinion, was a much better vocalist; listening to his live recordings is like listening to a saxophone that has a soul.

If I remember correctly, it was an act brought about by the fact that he used to drink like that... then again, I could be wrong!

When a friend gets into my car, turns on my ipod, and the Rat Pack comes on, I get a WTF look all of the time :).

    I like it!

I'm always getting odd looks as to my music choices. First off, I'm a huge "Oldies" fan. People always look at you a little oddly when they hear the 50's stuff, and your only 39. Next, we have the fact that I am also a huge ELO fan... 'nuff said as to the odd looks on that one! Then there is the classical music, though I am not as knowledgeable as I would like on this one. Finally, when I travel (I drive a lot for work) I listen to books on tape. For some reason, a lot of people think that's really odd.
