Oh yes, that's the island where almost all banks have an office there isn't it.

Harold, you must have been in the oil/gold thing much earlier isn't it :)

Speaking of rising oil prices, does it hurt you guys or affect your choices when shopping for big engines these days? ST reported that many people have switched to lower octanes but as far as I know our engines consume more of it & performs poorer, resulting more pump visits so might as well stick to higher octanes. Happened to my earlier car when I tried 92.

Langkawi is still taxfree when it comes to cars but the Roti Prata and Teh Tarik there recoups the taxes!!!( Roti costs MYR3.00! and Teh Tarik MYR3.00 too!!!)

We Malaysians can buy cars there too (talking about non-Langkawi Islanders..) and register it there. The cars come with KV prefix. Can it come over to mainland ? Yes. BUT...

You can only drive the KVplater 3 months in a year on mainland soil. Then the car have to be back on the island. Something akin to a 'visa' for the car!!! Can you bring it over for good ? YES. After say, 2 or 5 years, you apply for the tax strata application and the car will be taxed accordingly based on the year's depreciation. You pay the tax in one lump sum and there you have it...the car can 'live' in KL or anywhere in Malaysia. There's a 512M with Labuan plates running around KL at one time. Labuan plates are prefixed LA.

If/when I have enough money to actually think of buying a brand new F430/F599 or even ..all kneel!! F40/F50/Enzo......I'll do it the above way. What the heck..I have the car shipped to KL for F1 season and fly up to LKW for a weekly dose of driving the car around the Island..Notice why the islanders have Japanese cars rather than the ubiquitous Protons ? Because a Sunny is the same price as a Waja..which'd you rather have ?

Note : Have never worked with JPJ/LTA. Info gleaned from years of thinking how to get an Fcar on the cheap,i.e no/less tax!!!

Alternatively, don't register the car.... keep it in the Next car bonded warehouse. Then when u want to use it put trade plates on it and drive it around.

So true!! But MY Trade Plates very ugly-lah...If only they look like the German trade plates, not so bad!! And you aren't allowed to affix the plates to the cars...you'd have to just hang it by the strings/belts whatever over the rear boot/bonnet and the other for the front, just put it on the dash!!

What?! Bloody prata & teh tarik more expensive than SG too! Last heard from my friend recently is that you can buy a tax-free import car register it on Langkawi & after a year, you can bring it over to mainland which would be considered 2nd hand & much cheaper on taxes. He's even thinking of storing it in a warehouse & put it up on hoist to prevent flat spots & weakened suspension.

Dilligaf, thanks for the post. Those must be the boys I saw. MM has become a little pricey after the renovation, about S$4-500/night for normal room rates, off peak.

    Jon,
So what's your decision gonna be? I'm getting to be indecisive now too! Terrible predicament and it's much more difficult than poring over a ton of spec. sheet..V12 or V8 or current Flat 6 Turboed? Pakai Pcar but in an Fcar forum....

I envy abang Lung kita...no indecisiveness whatsoever when he goes for the trigger!

Well, he said it. I'm working real hard on the 2nd part. :(

Please, lady luck be on my side. Please...

I'm in no hurry bro. Testa is one of the toughest Ferrari to sell with the highest road tax, biggest ass, high maintenance & thirsty. Did I mention the high fuel prices? So, the owners won't be having an easy time selling them & I have two choices :)

I'm thinking if I do make an offer which I should get it, where am I going to keep one of it? I have to tell them that I've swapped it & my mum probably can't tell the difference. But first of all, I'd better get myself a real family car now. I almost have to put a "For hire" sign on top of my 348 ferrying my family around!

Isk, are you looking @ a 550? Did you get that UK magazine which did a comparism of Daytona, Testa(512TR) & a 550 recently? I can scan & post it if you need. They said the 550 is almost bullet proof & very easy to drive. They were quite impressed with the Testa but the Daytona holds the best being a vintage & very rare.

    Jon,
Yes please..if you can scan it...pretty please. Yup..550.

    BUT

    Fong,
Yeah, I know power-lah...and to make matters worst I got a lil' bit itchy and called a friend who can cut me a deal on something in grey also...no..not the tin can! The person is looking for a manual TT and has got a 3.5kkm! Mk2. Willing to part ex....( this friend also said he can rig up 2 baby recaros at the back if I need to ferry the kids and that the winged seat can actually slide to allow ingress/egress for a 5 and 7 yr old easy...) Lagi susahlah!!

The above posts on Langkawi also made me think about utilizing the privileges of me being a Malaysian!! Sell the Pcar, sell the others too and just get an Odyssey for the wife and a Cooper S for me..(always wanted the Mini..). Slowly but surely, have in excess of USD400k, which is what we have to pay anyways for a 430 / Gallardo in KL,,,,and then blow it on an F40 ! Keep the car in Langkawi and bring it on for F1 season and High Days. Guess it'll have to remain forever in LKW since our JPJ knows the value of 'extreme' Ferraris and I doubt they will factor in depreciation if I try to hoodwink them in a couple of years...!

    Howzat?

Good morning. Saw this a little late or I would have brought the magazine along. Isk, I haven't driven an F40 but do you think it's fun keeping away a GBP300K car on an island where you cannot fully exercise it regularly? The salt environment may not be too merciful on the car, not to mention the turbos. From what I read, almost all drivers get a thrilling experience in it especially when the turbo kicks in but almost all drives were done on tracks as that's what the F40 was for rather than an F50 which is more of a daily user. Anyway we buy Ferrari out of emotion rather than rational, so go for it if it fits you :)

Just received an email from HS. The annual track day is on 16-17 June, we're to depart on Friday 1pm or earlier. They'll be police escort from KL Sungei Besi toll to the hotel. Please contact Caroline Lam of HS. Oh lastly, there's a 10% discount for servicing of cars from 15th May, prior to the track day!

    Anyone going?

    Jon,

Haven't driven an F40 before myself...and not sure whether I'm up to it anyway!! But an F40 to me is the ultimate Ferrari and you can rest easy upon acquiring one...hehe! No more needing to dream of any Fcars for that matter and besides..the price tax-free equates to what we have to pay for a 430 and the like.

I'm fully aware of the salt-ish island air not being good for the car and where to exercise the beast...? I've identified some parts of LKW where you can actually run the car, near the open paddy field stretch...Telaga Tujuh if I'm not mistaken. There's also loads of Fcars in warehouses in Kuah, the capital 'city' of LKW. The road from the Airport to Kuah is fun too...when there's no traffic!! But seriously, the F40 is a track car first and foremost and maybe take it on a week's stretch on mainland and back, that means I have 12 weeks 'multiple entry' visa! Get it on a ferry to Kuala Perlis...and then from KP, about 500km...a straight highway drive down to KL!!! Woohoo! Speeding Tickets galore!

Now..have to find spare USD400-450k...Fong, you wanna buy a semi-dee in Setiakasih, Damansara?

whatever you buy , make sure its convenient to use.

its like the boat thing , when the thing was hot , you'd 'pop' out to the marina
all the time , just to touch the damn thing.

after a while , it got less and less frequent ... eventually ... twice a year .. if
at all .... then you suddenly realise the amount of berthing charges you're
paying ... then you sell (thats also why 2nd hand boats are cheap).

so , if you want a sports car , get one that you can trash as and when you
feel like it and keep at home.

if you have to fly to go see your car ... aiya .......

    cheers.
    .

Hahaha Chang, that's a good analysis of owning a boat & there's quite a few Marina here including the up & coming Onedegree15. Our Punggol Marina capsized under it's own operation costs & memberships went down with it. There's not enough wealthy people here to support it but I do sincerely hope it'll take off. Always liked boats....

I was thinking about Ferraris & realised that perhaps the F355s will be the last of it's kind to be here for long as most 360s will be exported. I don't know about those with the 55% OMV though & whether if people will find it worthwhile to COE it. I am shopping for cars from late 90s & early 2000 but all of them have such high paper values that doesn't justify owning them. Some of them have about S$100K OMV & S$47KCOE, if anyone were to buy & use it, the yearly depreciation alone don't make sense & we should really be buying a brand new, latest model & with full warranty.

360s are still beyond most of us now & there are very few choices for below S$200K Fcars while the 355 still hang around mid S$200K & most novice will rather pay more for other sports cars=easier loan, lesser interest, easier re-sale, newer model & warranty. So sad, only left a few struggling blokes like me supporting the old cars.

    Yeah Chang,

The post on acquiring an F40 via the Langkawi route is just a viable alternative...maybe when I touch 50 and so-called retired lah. For now you're right about the boat thing and I also believe in driving or gaining max enjoyment from something you bought. It's just that lately, due to work commitments, easier said than done and I guess Jon can attest to that even though he's in SG and his car's in SG as well! I'm in CN and the car's in MY..so I have an excuse. Jon doesn't....

In my sights are 'used' supremos (550) or 'underrated' dynamos (456). Both are V12s except the 550s costs almost double the 456.. Wife has always loved the 456s and 550s. More 'mature' says she. Her husband's never gonna be that I guess!
