Any Stephen King fans?

I have never read any of his stuff before, but some friends told me I would love The Dark Tower series. I just finished reading all the books and I have to say I am kind of disappointed, I liked them for the most part, but a lot of it was fluff and unncessary and/or confusing and often didn't make any sense and I hated the ending. Just wondering what other people's thoughts are.

 

I am a huge King fan, however; I did NOT like the Dark Tower series... I completely agree with your description.

On the other hand, books like Christine, 'Salem's Lot, etc., are excellent.

I love horror with a twist. I’ve found most King's movies have a strong intriguing beginning but fall apart towards the end. As if he gets bored midway & just throws together the resolution of plot at finish. Cool how he has cameo appearance in his films. I will always watch his stuff tho because it is creepy and believable in a certain way.

 

I read the entire Dark Tower Series last year. I loved it except for the third book I think. I also read Salem's Lot and didn't like it at all. Nothing happens in the story.

 

I loved his old stuff, Dead Zone, The Stand, The Shining, Christine etc but didn't care much for his later books. Grab one of his books with a bunch of short stories in it one was titled Night Shift and another was Four Past Midnight. The dark tower series was a bit diffrent than his horror stuff.

 

I've read a decent chunk of King's works & quite enjoyed most of them. Must say that in the genre that King is most known for, I largely prefer the writings of Robert R. McCammon. Swan Song and The Wolf's Hour would be two I'd suggest for a taste.

 

I thought The Stand was very good. Worth picking up.

The TV miniseries they did in the '90s did not do justice to the book imho.

 

I may try reading some of his older stuff. Maybe my mistake was starting with the Dark Tower series.

 

I've read a few by King.

Didn't like the Dark Tower series much and quit after the first two books. The Stand is great though now seriously era-dated. If you want something really and truly creepy get Gerald's Game. The Green Mile is excellent, as is the movie; the Tommyknockers is my favorite King book.

 

I've read almost every Stephen King book.

Try the Under the Dome or Dreamcatcher or Desperation or Insomnia.

Very good reads if you enjoy a fully fleshed out scifi novel.

Two more King books I remember reading...Insomnia and It. Both recommended.

 

Loved Christine, read it as a teenager, but loved Shawshank even more, read a couple yrs ago. A buddy emailed me a pic of Kings house, he was in Maine on business, house looked very normal but for the creepy creatures on the wrought iron fence.

I'm not a big fiction fan (reality is far more interesting), but his book "On Writing" is freakin' brilliant. part biography, part literary advise book, part fiction (he retells a lot of the back stories behind the plots of his book). a little something for everyone.

highly recommended.

 

He mentions writing On Writing in the Dark Tower series - I have been thinking about reading that one. I will start putting some of these suggestions on my list! I love my Kindle - allows me to carry so many books with me at once LOL

 

I didn't know about On Writing, but will now get it. Could be nothing but a beneficial read for someone trying to reinvent himself as a writer at nearly 62; no doubt entertaining as well, in typical King fashion.

 

I think he needs to do a horror story on a conversion van.

I've read almost every one of his books up until two or three years ago (up until From a Buick 8, I think, which I did not care for; The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Hearts in Atlantis were not my cup of tea either). I really couldn't get into the Dark Tower series.

I think you'll really enjoy The Stand, Needful Things, and his short stories/novellas (Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Night Shift, Different Seasons, Skeleton Crew, Four Past Midnight and Full Dark, No Stars). And of course the classics - The Shining, It, Pet Sematary, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Cujo and The Dark Half.

The Running Man was the very first book I read cover to cover in English when I was learning it in school. My mom, a SK fan and a teacher of English (as a foreign language), thought the best way to get me to read in English was to give me a book I couldn't put down. It worked!
