Are these good SUV's or are they trouble, or a little bit of both? What should you look out for when buying a used one?

I have had 2. A 98 and a current 2003 which is my daily driver.

For my 98, I wrote an epinions review on it.

    03:
The new one is a BMW E38 more or less with RR offroading ability. I highly recommend it, I have had 15k uneventful miles with it. The car was tested for 2 years in some of the harshest enviroments on Earth to make sure it would still work. And yes it does work pretty damn good.

I suggest the 03, it is seriously one of the best SUVs ever. Not the fastest, but who wants to go fast in an SUV?? The 03 corrected everything that was at fault in the older MKIII design (the one that was made up to 2001)

Omar, the reason I ask, is that I am getting into the used car business (awaiting my dealer license right now), and am considering dealing in the Range Rovers. Seem like hot sellers. I mainly want to deal in "high end" cars, SUV's but that have a price in the low $20's max., which seems to be the used car "breaking point" in Amarillo, Texas. If it's over $23K...forget it. They are going to the Chevy house to buy a new Tahoe!

Ok then, I suggest you tread cautiously, the MKIII are british designed and british made. (The MKIV is german designed and made in a BMW designed factory)

If you are going to be offering warrenties etc, then if by chance something f#%ks up, be prepared. They are really popular amoung the african american segment, much more so then other nationalites due to their associated "bling status" as the top of the SUV food chain.

I've had a '98, 01, and now a 2003. What a difference. Having the BMW engine makes the car!!! It drives like a sporty offroad Rolls Royce??? Does that make sense? O well, the car is AWESOME!!!

There are some old threads about this, with input from LR salesmen.

As for 'bling' - you can get a mid-90's MB E-class for the mid-high teens, and then spend another $5k in wheels, tint and stereo and have plenty of blingety-bling-bling action for $20k. You can even get an early 90's (ie. 94, the nice big ones) S-class loaded for the low $20k's now.

For even less: I had a 1988 MB 190E 2.3 I paid $3400 for people thought was worth $$$. Drove it two years, a friend backed into someone ($1200-1400 estimate on damage), I then sold it for $3200.

Had a '98 4.0 SE for 4 years, bought it new for $ 62k. I put 62k miles on it and worth $25k when I sold it 2 years ago.

The cars are well known to depreciate so much compared to other SUV.

    I switched to the G

No doubt is a very comfortable car. I just wish it had more power and torque.

Up to 2001 models,4000,4600,petrol,2500diesel,on RHD models the diagnostic port is in the passenger footwell, code read it its important the blend motors and all kinds of faults can be pulled out, they are not as bad as some make out they are but do need GOOD servicing, get the emissions checked to see the condition of the cats etc, wheel bearings £300 per hub its a complete new hub assembly though i have a hub at work i have to press apart to get a bearing number off to see aviliabilty, havent had time yet though, water pumps carry a heavy viscus fan load so check for bearing play these do fail, the air suspension can play up usually the air pipe between the two rear wheels rubs though on the body causing a slow drop overnight, easy fix though, hight sensors are moded new type now and play up now and then but code read will show any faults with these,engines-4000 petrol can suffer liner shift,4600petrol doesent seem to get this problem,2500 diesel is a bit of a slug stay away from this engine, gearboxes do ok but go with the auto the manual box does not suit this model, put a new block in my sisters 4000,1998 perol range rover 2000miles ago it failed with 74,000 on the clock, heres a pic of the job i did,did this at home had to keep the sister happy and saved here a few £

As for the 02 on model ive serviced a couple and they are very nice, and a lot more £££££££££ to buy, easyer to service just the addition of service set indicator on the dash to re-set every 12,500 miles, you will need special equipment to re-set this, the diagnotic port is on RHD models,is on the lower part of the righthand side of the dash,4400 petrol model in this is a beaut, the diesel's very up and go to so hope ive given you a little insight to the model,

    cheers
    Dale.
