I was thinking of doing some preventive maintenance and cleaning the MAFs in my 430. Any tricks to this? Do I need to remove the "screen" or simply spray the whole thing on the inside, including the screen? In the pictures, the MAF differs from the other ones I have cleaned or replaced before on other cars, which aren't in a giant plastic housing.

Remove 5 point torx security bolts , remove the actual MAF, then spray directly on the MAF sensor itself where sensing unit is

Just my two cents ..if you are are not experiencing any issues leave well enough alone

If it works properly, do yourself a favour: don't touch it.
From preventive maintenance to consequent failure is a moment.

I was experiencing a performance issue. Flooring it, there was way more hesitation than just the traction control, cleaned the MAFs, no difference was made. Replaced the MAFs, car started up horribly, like I put diesel fuel in it. Unplugged the car from battery overnight, connected it back the next day and it was like a I had a new engine installed; no huge lag when flooring.

By disconnecting the battery you erased the fuel trim "learnt" curves .. that is the reason
I hope you did the self learn procedure of letting it idle for 10 mins at after battery disconnect and warm up with no electric draw or AC

Unintentionally, yes. I always let it warm up for 10 minutes without the AC on. Thanks for the input though! It's good to know!!

Anytime you change anything that could change the way things combust..e.g. spark plugs, coils, maf, etc you need to do the relearn process which starts by disconnecting battery and doing the 10 minute idle it's right in the manual

When I remember to I take a data log of MAF readings and use a rough calculation to determine horsepower fromg/s of airflow, on so I know if I'm in the right ball park. Keeping track of a few logs over time gives you an idea if anything is off.
