According to Speedweek this is happening in 2012: http://www.speedweek.ch/news/14792/Rom-Grand-Prix-2012.html Local officials are saying that it will happen in 2 years. The question remains open whether this will have any effecton the Monza GP or not.
The city of Rome is still aiming to get a Grand Prix in 2012 or 2013, according to Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of the Italian capital city. Alemanno says that he has agreements with the racing authorities and has plans for a circuit in the Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR) district. This has been designed by Hermann Tilke (inevitably) and the site has been chosen because the roads in the area are wide and run through parkland, which was designed to be a show ground for 1930s Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. It is now an area where there are many offices, but the mayor says that he needs to get the agreement of local residents in order for the race to go ahead. Alemanno says that the race would be second event in Italy, rather than a replacement for the Italian GP at Monza. Given the level of competition that there is for Grands Prix at the moment, this is going to be a tough argument, although Ferrari fans would certainly turn out for a street event in Rome. The intention is probably for the race to replace Turkey when the Istanbul contract runs out after next years race. Given the complicated bureaucracy of Italy, the race may never take place, but Alemanno says he is doing his best to make it happen.
Indeed. However, it is another excuse to re-post the legendary "Ferrari-Shell Circuit" TV ad: http://vimeo.com/2283022 Enjoy!
I don't want Monza getting replaced by a Rome GP. It is one of the few remaining historic tracks after all. That said to me a Rome GP is a LOT more interesting from a touristic perspective than Monza. It is also a lot easier to travel to from the US with direct flights into Rome. Plus there is a lot more to do and see before and after the GP than in plain old Milano.
