I just updated my "man cave" computer - the old XP machine gave up the ghost. Now on a nice quad-core Win7 dual-monitor box out here in the "cigar lounge". I had hoped to import all my photos and such from the 2 old drives from the XP box. But alas, when I try to open most of the original folders, the new computer says "you do not have permission to open this folder" blah blah blah. I still have the old computer and COULD drop the drives back in, fire it up, and do a legitimate backup. Just a lot of hassle. Isn't there some way I can FORCE those folders to be visible on the new computer? Nothing seems obvious to that end in Win7 on the new box.... same error, folder after folder. Jedi
Do you know how to use DOS? lol you can right click the folder and go into properties then security tab then advanced and you can edit your preferences there (make sure you are logged in as admin).
The other way to reset permissions is to remove the drive, then beat it upon a metal desk with psychotic vigor until a police sniper tranquilizes you from 200 yards under the cover of darkness and McDonald's french fries, then bury the remnants of the device near Area 51 while wearing a hat made from tin (NOT aluminum) foil. Works for me. Every time.
Actually, I dumped it into Vodka for 2 hours. It then released ALL of it's data in Russian. Just a simple translate.google.com later, all the data is happily (if hungover) restored. Jedi
Ah. Is this a file permission issue as Speedcore addressed, or is it a security permission issue as in "You don't have permission to access this folder" type of thing?
No changing of permissions in Win7 made a difference at all. I simply had to boot that computer as a stand-alone, and do a bunch of backups. Problem solved. Jedi
