I would seriously consider a different car altogether. They are nice..but tend to fall apart. The 6 cylinder is a good motor..infact quite excellent. Stay away from the eight altogether.

Suspension issues and common and electrical issues will be a pain in the butt. Costs are quite high for parts and they are terriable in the snow (if thats a concern).

I've driven a mid nineties XJ6....Awsome car! We always hear the stuff about Jags being unreliable, and maybe they are, but wow what a nice car. If I wasn't worried by reliability problems I'd probably take a Jag over a Mercedes Audi etc. It felt so solid, I was truely amazed. Good get up and go to from the Inline-6...A guy my dad worked with still has his XJR Supercharged 6.....I know its windshield wipers flew off once, it spent a day in a snowbank, and once wouldn't start, but he has still held onto it. :)

I've put 55,000 miles in 3 years on my 1996 XJ6 VDP with no problems, other than a check engine light to get me to replace my O2 sensors (which do need replacing so I can't fault the light). Been super dependable. Look for a '96 or '97 VDP for between $10K and $15K. The V8s have cylinder liner and timing chain issues. The straight 6 engine, used up to 1997, is easy to work on if need be (water pump, starter, alternator) and has been in production since 1950! I get between 18 and 24 MPG depending on city/highway mix.
