There is lots of feedback in the sections for the older cars and everyone thinks that these starters are the best thing ever. I will be buying one and agree that they are much much better than OEM. The only difference is that they sound different because of the gearbox and faster turning speed.

Thanks for posting - can you describe the difference regarding the sound? Does it still sound good?

I have one on my Mondial 3.2. It's a Nippondenso and essentially the same as the starter on the later 348s. That would be your sound comparison. I posted some pictures in the Technical and/or the Mondial forum.

The stock starter turns at a much slower speed so for that reason you hear the starter turning in conjunction with the engine and you can hear it labor and release as it fights the compression of the cylinders.

With the gear reduction starter it turns much faster so it sounds more even. Also there is minor gear whine from the reduction unit.

The fact is that the sound is a very minor detail that many people either don't notice or pay attention to it when they are alerted to the difference. It is not a massive thing and the substantial advantages offered by the gear reduction unit are well worth it.

Why don't you rebuild your starter?
There shouldn't be any starting problem, with an original Bosch unit! Works fine, on our car.

It's not that difficult and not expansive to rebuild the starter motor, just send it to somebody specialized in and within a week you get it back. So i would stay original - sure a planetary gear starter is the better technical solution- but IMO there is no need for, if your original starter works fine.

Ich kann gerne eine gute Adresse in Deutschland nennen, arbeitet sauber und zu vernünftigen Preisen.

    Vielen Dank :)

I don´t need to stay original, because the starter is covered by the airbox. For sure, i´ll keep the OEM one...

If the planetary starter is the best possible solution - well, i´ll go for it.

DENSO, which is the new name for Nippondenso and is the basis/source for FerrariStarters and their parent company http://www.gustafsonmachine.com/, just a different mounting interface.

If you look on the FerrariStarters' website we'll notice that they use the same image for all of their applications.

Here's my before and after plus one from a 348.

In the end, it's benefit for its cost, warranty and weight.

They confirmed by email, that it´s a genuine DENSO and no Chinese knock-off.

    Will post after installation.

    Less than 400.

The BOSCH starter has no planetary drive - that´s why i´ll go for the Denso unit.

Another advantage is that if you run out of fuel you can drive home on the starter motor. Think of it as a hybrid Testarossa :)
