So I'm accepting my offer to go to UF to earn a PhD, so will be moving to florida this year.

My girlfriend is thinking about coming down as well, but she will probably need to stay in the Lakeland area.

She took a quick look last night at housing there, and really thinks that it would be the right time for her to buy a home.

Any neighborhoods she should look into specifically? Any she should avoid? Anything interesting in Lakeland or nearby we should know about?

Lakeland is pretty far from Gainesville. A couple hours. One of my best friends lives there, he's a trainer. He rents, but housing is pretty reasonable in Lakeland.

Yeah, I know. If this works out, it'll be a me in gainesville during the week, and lakeland during the weekend type deal so I wouldn't be commuting back and forth daily...

You'll end up splitting your weekends I bet. Not too much to do in Lakeland unless you want to head to Orlando or Tampa. There is alot in Gainesville, especially if you like the outdoors. I go to most Gators games you'll have to come tailgate with us.

    No. Nothing.

Lakeland is in the middle of nowhere in between Orlando and Tampa. Although I'm sure the housing is cheap, she'd be much better off looking elsewhere. I suggest both of you visit the area prior to making too many decisions b/c you may wind up disappointed.

Again, good luck at UF and congrats on your acceptance!! :)

I'd definitely be up for that!

Unfortunately, Lakeland is where the Geico office is, and she wants to be close to work. If it had been in Tampa, that may have been better, but Lakeland is pretty much the choice she's got right now.

We are certainly going to be coming down for a few days to visit and get a feel for the neighborhood and to look at some houses.

    Thanks for the well-wishes :)

I remember there being a lot of sand fleas there. And not much else.

Looks south of downtown Lakeland. Geico is out by the airport IIRC so you'll be close to work. Southside is nicer than the northside.

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Bawhahahaah.....I live in Lakeland....and it's NOT Miami ! :D

Lakeland is boring but it's just 25 minutes to Tampa and 1 hour to Orlando. Lakeland is safe, lower taxes, and no congestion.

I know the Geico office...off Pipkin and County line rd. I live on the south side in Imperial Lakes. The G office is 13 minutes from my house.

Lakeland offers the usual quality of life but I like hot young chicks and techno music....

I found the chicks...but off to the Hard Rock Casino (Floyd's Nightclub inside ) exactly 45 minutes from my driveway. They're on Indian land so you can drink till 6am....or a least dance till then. :D

The only reason I live here instead of Miami is that my business requires a central Florida location for delivery logistics.....or I'd be hanging with my Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster on south beach instead of the Wing house. :D :D

    Any other questions....just ask.
