I am an Electrical Engineer and I would like to build something that will interface with the engine computer on my car. I would like to be able see what the computer sees to help with diagnosing problems. Maybe I could come up with something that everyone could use. Does anyone have any info or specs on how to talk to the computers.

    TIA

There is a USB port on the left side of the Motronic.

You can plug a USB flash drive into it, and it'll automatically download all the firmware onto the flash drive. Pop that drive into your computer, and the whole file structure (XP) will be pretty evident. There's some cool stuff in there. If you play with the folder named 'Benzina" you can see all the fuel maps, via Microsoft Excel. Change a few cells, save the spreadsheet, and re-insert the flash drive into the USB port on the car. It'll reflash the ECU in about 5 seconds.

On my motronic, there is also a Firewire jack... but I'm not a Mac guy, so I just use the USB. Late 95 cars had a 802.11b WiFi signal embedded in them.

Oh wait a second, maybe not.

This is as close as you can get with commercial products: http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=50&products_id=169

But be warned, that device is so popular that it sells out *IMMEDIATELY* whenever a batch arrives.

It plugs into the 27C256 chip socket on one side and into your laptop on the other side. You can see what's being stored in the 27C256's memory area, and you can download your own code/data into it, as well.

"This is the newest Ostrich, the 2.0 unit. It is extremely small and compact, durable, versatile, and powerful. Full 921.6k speed, from 4k (2732A) up to 512k (4mbit 29F040) and everything in between (27C128, 27C256, 27C512). Also works in conjunction with the FordEmu interface.

This new design distills the experience to date from the Ostrich product, adding key power features such as address tracing, totally bumpless uploads and readbacks, fully isolated and buffered inputs and outputs, easy-access pinout configuration switches, clearly marked connectors, upgraded power supply sections, long-life lithium ion coin cell battery backup, reduced chipset USB interface, and common JEDEC-compatible 24, 28, or 32-pin emulation header.

The new form factor is incredibly small and compact. With CNC-cut enclosures, as well as silkscreened lexan product description overlay, the Ostrich 2.0 sets a new standard in fitment and appearance. With state-of-the art performance, it is without rivals.

Comes with 6 foot USB cable and 18" 28-pin DIP emulation header. Also comes with 28-pin machine-tooled socket that can be snapped onto the emulation cable for protection and improved connections.

Address tracing functionality has yet to be implemented in any of the popular software packages, but this will change once folks become aware of the possibilities. Here is a link to the Moates hardware protocols, including descriptions of the command structure needed for trace."

Okay, I must be an idiot because cannot read the above. It's like English, but it has no meaning. What language is that, pray tell? :)

Actually there is a thing called a breakout box that plugs between the ecu and the connector. Then you back probe the ecu to read volts/ohms or scope interested terminals. It is a throwback to the days prior to obd1 when there were no sd2 testors etc...

Yeah, if you had the analog sensor data from a breakout box going in to a laptop that was also digitally connected to your Motronic ecus via the Ostrich 2, then you'd pretty well have all of the electronic capability that you'd need.

I seem to remember a thread not too long ago whose subject was similar to this one. The gentleman who originally posted was an engineer whose desire was to have a display that would instantaneously translate and display exactly what the Motronic ECU might be trying to communicate via its "Check Engine" lights. For example, the display would indicate "throttle potentiometer" if that's what caused the Check Engine light to appear. In fact, that gentleman had a preliminary software version built; but he was asking for feedback so that he might determine the feasibility of going further with the project.

It's late, and my searching skills accordingly are poor. Anyone remember the thread to which I am referring?

Actually, who cares -- I'll just plug in my USB cable per Daniel's recommendation :D
