A good friend of mine is moving to australia...adelaide in a few months and he was wondering if he could ship his car overseas. We both have '04 SL55 and at first he thought well i sell mine here and just buy one there but then after a little research he found out than an '04 SL55 worth nearly $50K here in the states is worth a bit over $200K USD in Australia! I told him I would ask around on f-chat see if anyone knew anything. Also I know they're not right hand drive, but I wouldn't mind paying whatever the shipping cost to Australia if I could sell my car at 4x it value here. It obviously can't be that easy otherwise people would do it all the time but does anyone know the story. Thanks again in advance.

My Car has 32K miles, look how much this one cost with 42K km

I used DAS to ship a car to Argentina once back around 99

I believe you will need to have the title to ship it

I have the title...are you telling me I can ship my car and sell it for 4x times it value though, there's got to be some sort of catch. You know the saying if somethings too good to be true it probably is, If I could net $150K I'd say adios to my SL in a heartbeat but Im sure theres more than just having the title like taxes, thanks though

from what i understand left hand drive cars are NOT legal in australia and there is also some sort of ridiculous duty on importing vehicles into australia.
I may be wrong but try posting in the australia section and you will get a more accurate answer.

Don't mean to be stealing the thread.

But James, do you have any info on shipping to Switzerland? I haven't found any restrictions on importing a CDN or US car there.

It absolutely depends on the country so you'll have to find an atty or someone familiar w import laws etc

In Arg for example a car must be either brand new or before 1970 to bring in and I am sure there is some law that prevents you from instantly flipping it + at least 40% tax, not to mention having to grease a few palms

Ask the guys in the Australian section. I don't know the specifics but it is hard to bring cars over here, which deters alot of people. Your car being LHD will make it difficult. And yes cars in Australia are waaay over priced, as your ebay link demonstrated:(
Import taxes, Stamp duty, compliance, rego etc all ruins the fun.

This comes up every month or so in the Oz section - general consensus is don't do it unless the car means something to you or it's rare in Australia, the time and money it will take to make it saleable will take a big chunk out of any "profit" you might think you'll make.

Your $200k car will need to be converted and there might be other ADR (Australian Design Rules) that it doesn't conform to due to being a US version - Australia has one of the strictest systems around, any wonder we don't have many of the real special cars you see in Europe? After conversion, it's still an "import" which has a massive stigma, will take a long time to move and will be substantially devalued.
