http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/06/accident_blocks_eastbound_traf.html Man hospitalized after car flips on Route 78 east in Union County by Tony Kurdzuk and Claire Heininger/The Star-Ledger Sunday June 15, 2008, 6:53 PM An unidentified man was hospitalized with serious injuries tonight after his car flipped on Route 78 Eastbound in Union County, police said. The two-door Dodge Viper flipped over on the highway in Berkeley Heights shortly after 4 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police, who were still on the scene investigating the cause of the crash this evening. The accident caused several miles of stalled traffic on the eastbound roadway, police said. Tony Kurdzuk/The Star-LedgerAfter walking away as a passenger apparently unharmed, an unidentified woman (left) cries as she prays for her boyfriend still trapped inside a Dodge Viper after a single vehicle accident on Rt. 78 The victim, whose name and age were not immediately released, was taken to Overlook Hospital in Summit for treatment, police said. His passenger, who also was not identified, was apparently unharmed. Truck driver Charles Mann of Lawton, Oregon, witnessed the accident. "They were in the center lane and everything appeared normal," Mann said. "The next thing I knew I saw an explosion which was the all the debris coming off (the car) from when they hit the wall on the side of the road." He said the car flipped over several times before coming to a rest in the weeds on the side of the road.
a couple of people i know on the rescue squad told me that the driver died also.. but idk if they are 100% sure
I just got that confirmation on the other board as someone worked with the gentlemen. Aparantly they were not speeding and the car just feel apart, the passengers words exactly. So sad.
Very sad and I hope the driver pulls through... I sense a serious lawsuit coming if the car just fell apart.
I got stuck in the traffic and saw the car , their were skid marks about 30feet going from the center lane to the wall, he hit the wall hard ,so with the skid marks and they way the car was, he was not doing 65ph for sure. Hope every body is OK. I,am no saint I get on it once in a while. If i had to guess he was speeding and somebody cut him off he panic slam on the brakes the rest is history. Like i said its just a guess, the importain thing is if they are allright.
From what I've heard, he was doing no more that 10 mph above the speed limit and just flowing with traffic. I think the front left tire blew out and thats what caused his to veer into the center divider. May he RIP.
I think we should all respect the driver and not blame anyone. None of us know what really happened...
thanks for everyone condolences. he was a great guy always had a smile on his face. and no he wasnt speed something went wrong with the car.
Hi, my name is Ingrid, I'm Andrew's girlfriend, the "woman on the left" on The Star-Ledger. Andrew had just bought that Viper from a guy in New York and had it serviced in a Dodge dealership on Route 10. I'm not quite sure, but I believe it was in East Hanover. On Sat june 7 2008, I drove his car to that place, and he talked to Scott, one of their mechanics, to change the exaustor, put insullation, replace the interior panel of the driver's door, change oil and do some other stuff in the car. The car got a lot hot inside, I can tell it... and the new exaustor would make it cooler so that we didn't need to turn the AC on our feet every time we wanted to go for a ride. I went with him in my car to pick up the Viper the day before the accident. He asked for Scott to change the ball of the stick shift and they said that he was not there. There comes another guy saying that he had done this and that, saying that the car was a lot cooler now etc... As we arrived at Andrew's house, he made this comment: "I paid Scott to do the service and then this guy tells me that he did a lot of the service. Did you see that?" He was not very happy, because he had researched about scott before. He had the know-how to work on Vipers. And Andrew was very peaky with this kind of thing. He loved cars, and he wanted always the best service to be done on them. Andrew was a GREAT driver and he loved his life. We were making plans for our future together just before we took the curve to go onto 78 East. He gave some gas leaving the curve and immediately adapted to the flow of the traffic. And then he asked me: "Ingrid, did you notice how the car was shaking weird?" I said: yes... After that, and I mean immediately after I said YES, the car spun and hit the wall (Andrew's side of the car) off the shoulder on 78, before Exit 44. Then it spun again and stopped with the front towards the road and the back to the wall (without touching it). I was conscious all the time, and I can tell you for sure the way it happened. My feeling is that some part fell off that damn car, causing the car to spin around without control. I have the scene on and off in my mind, it was terrible to see my baby passed out while I could just climb my door and get out of the car. I remember that one of the wheels was on the road, really close and before the spot where the car first hit the wall. Andrew's side was destroyed, so was the back of the car. I remember seeing his left leg hanging out of the car, I just don't remember if it fell or if the people who tried to help him, including a doctor, removed it. But since they didn't touch his legs, I believe that the door should have fallen off when the car first hit the wall. There was still a piece of the door stuck on the wall yesterday. I just hope that someone will investigate this whole thing so that justice be made in honor of my dearest friend and baby and love Andrew. I'm just devastated with his loss. He was only 29, and full of life. I want justice...
That would be Warnock. I passed through that area of 78 just a few minutes before the accident. I'm sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace.
