I'm going to paint the exterior of my 2 car detached garage and small lake house this summer so I'm going to pick up a paint sprayer. Does anyone have any knowledge of the size I need or brands?? Any advice would be great.

Sherwin Williams has a Proforce Painter that does a great job for around $100.00. A professional airless can cost $500.00.

You might check with the tool rental places where you are. There a couple here that rent airless sprayers.

    good luck

I used one the other day on a job. It worked well for the ceiling but I wasn't impressed with the quality on the walls. It was a fairly high end model, from a friend but I didn't feel it was worth the effort... ended up doing the walls by hand.

  4. I bought one a Lowes, I returned it pretty fast, it was horrible. When I need one now, I rent one from a tool store, The quality is much better. They are fast, I painted a 2 story 2000 square foot building in one day! I did have to go back and cut in the trim which took another day.

Have a Magnum we bought from Home Depot five years ago. Think it was around $500 - the mid-priced model. Don't use it often but when I do it sure lays down some paint in a hurry - stick the pickup tube in a five gallon paint bucket and spray away. Learning curve is maybe 2/10, IMO. So far we've done two houses and a 30'x50' shop building. Worth every penny. Takes more time to mask and clean up than to apply the paint. Home Depot rents them if you don't want to buy. Get a hand held spray shield for going around doors, windows, gutters, etc. Saves screwing around with masking tape.

Wouldn't use it on a Ferrari.

I bought a Magnum Dx from Home Depot when I painted the entire interior of my new house. Paid $300 IIRC. That thing laid out 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of color like nobody's buisness!! The whole job took me about 6 days of spraying 2-3 hours a night. At $75 per 24 hours to rent a used/abused one, the $300 was a deal.

I believe the price differential relates to amount of use before the pump needs to be rebuilt. (Doesn't seem to be that hard and the kits are reasonable) The $300 Dx I got was rated at something like 150 gal before rebuild and the gal rating went up relative to the price. If you paint houses for a living, get the big boy. I only had to prime/paint 1 4000 SF house, so i'll probably never use it again.

As far as thinning, the book says it wasn't needed for water based latex, so I didn't and never had a problem.
