So the time has finally come to pull the trigger on my dream car and after searching for a black on black berlinetta 6spd one has popped up on ebay and its relatively local. I'm just wondering if any of you are familiar with the car or know anything else about it that I should know. I've got pretty much all of the records from new, it had the entire top end rebuilt with new valve guides etc. and the exhaust manifolds have been taken care of in 2004 at around 33K and the car now has 42K on it. Any worries with having to do a similar service anytime soon? The car doesn't smoke at all on startup or deccel so I think they're probably still good, here's the link,

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-FERRARI-F355-BERLINETTA-BLACK-BLACK-BEAUTY-SPORT-CAR-HEAD-TURNER-/281091348249?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4172599719

I'll be doing all of my own work on the car so the slightly higher mileage is totally fine with me and honestly I prefer the "higher" mileage examples because parts that actually see moderate use actually tend to last longer.

Really excited to finally pick one of these up, I'll be scheduling a PPI for next weak at a Ferrari dealer but I still want to make sure I have all of my bases covered, any other suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated!

so do you think you will have to rebuilt the top end and the exhaust manifolds after they have been done already?

It looks like a nice car. Nothing stands out as a red flag in my mind.
I am sure you already know to have a leak down and compression check done prior to purchase. The ad says interior was redone although I don't see any close-ups to prove it really was

This car has been for sale for around 4 years. The story on the car is not clear but I would make sure the title is clean and the car fax does not show any damage history. I would be very interested to see if FoS can find any evidence of a prior crash. No one would bite on this car for about 3 years that it was listed for $40k.

I believe if my memory serves me well the last major was in the fall of 2004. It needs a major, badly. If you are prepared to do that right away at the price you can get it for then that is not an issue.

Thanks for the info much appreciated, I'm waiting on a Carfax report as we speak but I did just stumble across this thread while searching for the VIN#, http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355/181563-things-look-out-4-used-355-a.html

Looks like I might just have to walk away from this one...

And you would not be the first. The car may be fine (mechanically) but that would have to be verified and factored into the price.

I can't see an educated buyer paying $40k with the history and how much work it needs. If I was in the market for a second F355 and could verify the car is repaired correctly I would be looking at around $30-32k, no more.

Others on Fchat have dug up the damage/repair history. Some of the repair discriptions would scare off 99% of Ferrari buyers. The OP links to one above.

Ya its all very strange, here's what Carfax says..

Yet the current owner tells me its wrong and he has a clean title in hand, I'm not buying it. I'm sure the only reason the title is clean is because it was transferred to a state at one point that does not check this and a new "clean" title was issued. Still doesn't change the fact that something obviously happened to this car that up until this point no one has been able to provide an answer about. Also the current owner claims that the car was originally in South Carolina up until 06 and then brought to Oregon where it was put into a collection and hardly driven, the current owner says he bought the car 9 months ago from this collector and that it hasn't been for sale for the past four years... right...

On that note does anyone have a 6spd berlinetta they want to sell me :)

Regardless of what the seller says it was totalled, in 1997 appearently, and that can not be undone. If the current owner bought it 9 month ago or not is not important. It has been for sale for the past 4-6 years prior to that at the very least and is well known in the Fchat community.

It's a $30-32k car right now to an educated prudent buyer.

Who knows how much to someone else.

Agree on all accounts, pretty much exactly what I told the owner, the search continues.

On a side note do you make it out to the Exotic at Redmond Town Center meets? Me and the rest of the guys from Girodisc try to make it down when we can, we'll have to try to get together down there sometime.

Steve is right on the money here. Salvage cars cannot ever "clean" up the title, BUT...and its an important "but. I have carefully bought cars with salvage titles in the past and found they can be FANTASTIC deals. Lets say that a car was stolen and paid off by the insurance company. Then, shortly after that it is recovered in perfect condition and sold by the insurance company. The title will always be branded, but if you can buy it for 50-60% of book value and then enjoy it for many miles knowing that, while it will never sell for top money, it wont have much downside either. If is nice and you want a "keeper" offer $25k and work up from there. You never know until you ask.

I went and looked at this 355 in OR a couple years ago. I have 84 pictures (147MB worth) of the car. Directly after viewing this car, the folks at RTGT were gracious enough to let me inspect one of the 355s in their garage. The difference was striking.

I've often bit my tongue when I see this car mentioned, but I'm willing to save anyone the trouble/expense of travelling to see this car without some idea of the condition. The front clip has been replaced (joints inside the door jambs). The paint job is the couple hundred dollar special without good prep or masking. Sticky dash. Dash leather coming unstitched. Seats worn (along with everything else). Rattle can detailing to engine bay. Mismatched tires front to rear. No love has been given to this car, that I can see.

Has aftermarket muffler, Ferrari cats. Is a 1995 fixed roof 6sp. Black on black. Tool kit present and mostly complete.

I'll try to post a pic of the seam in the doorjamb. If anyone wants more pictures, I'll make them available. Not trying to disparage the seller, just providing a clearer description of the car (based on my visit). Pictures are worth...

Wow, Ferrari is not famous for their factory seam sealing and bodywork details, I have suspected previous repairs on many Ferrari's I've inspected in the past only to be proven wrong, but Holy Crap man!! How can anyone repair a car this poorly and expect to sell it..ever?

As I just mentioned in another post, I am a "go to guy" for any needy Ferrari for sale...but no one would like my bid on this car. I see a $20,000 track day future in this car for someone.

Another way to have a clean title is if it was paid off by the owner already when it was wrecked and the insurance reported it as a total loss, the owner repaired it (clean title in hand already), and life goes on? The state would not change a title to a salvage title if the repairs were already made without their knowledge.....

After reading everything about this car.....32k is way over what its worth. Saw a car similar to this and the guy involved pulled his offer of 35 before the guy excepted it. The car was worth 20 to 22 at best.
