I love Risk, I thought I was best in the world was 19-0 growing up with board game, never lost 2 rows of bombs with some 4-5's in between. However, I downloaded for iPad and play live, there are some really really good players. The 2 bomb rows doesn't work with them.

    Edward.

All kidding aside, played Risk with my kids for years. They've all grown up and moved out, so I don't play anymore.

And yes, it is a loooooooong playing game.

What is your question. My kids and I play the game with some frequency.

Lately we have come to appreciate Risk 2210 a lot due to this wonderful passage in the rules:
There is also a house rule that what happens at the Risk Table stays at the Risk Table!

p.s. My kids keep telling me there is strategy and good game play in Stratego which is a game that I still do not understand.

thanks for the post. we just need guidance on the basic moves each player can make, such as attacking endlessly, when to get more troops, etc. the rule sheet is vague.
    thank for your input.

What's your question? You get troops at the beginning of the turn. You can attack as long as you wish, so long as you can leave at least one army in each territory you own. At the end of your turn, you can move armies from any one territory you control to any other single territory you own, so long as there's an unbroken path between the two territories.

    That's how I've always played.

when can you cash in the cards for troops?
    3 new soldiers each turn?
seems that once someone gets on a roll, they dominate and win. hard to come back when down.

Only trade in/gain armies at the beginning of the turn. 3 armies minimum per turn.

Some people play house rules where you gain cards per victory, and can trade in -during- the turn. That's not stock ruleset.

No offense, but have you read the rules on the link?

Depending upon the vintage of the Risk game you are playing there are a variety of mechanisms to trade in the cards for armies. Classic that I played growing up requires you to only trade in at the beginning of your turn (or when you get to six cards) for an increasing number of armies each successive turn in. This can lead to very long games. There is also gaming strategy in when you turn in cards due to the interaction between countries controlled and the increasing number of armies obtained.

Mission Risk was similar but games could be shorter as you only had to complete your mission cards. You will have to read the rules in your setup carefully as they do vary between the versions and vintages.

Classic Risk basic order of operations:
    1. Count countries & continents and get armies.
    2. Turn in cards if you are going to.
    3. Place armies (including bonus countries where appropriate).
    4. Attack. You may attack until you have only one army on each country you own if you wish. You may only attack to contiguous countries.
    5. Fortify and take card if you had a successful invasion.

Table talk and alliances were not the traditional basis of Original Risk but another game called Diplomacy was mostly table talk and alliances that moved into all Risk game play once discovered in my experience. 2210 just formalized it.

There are any number of online Risk Simulation Games that run through this.

This 3 minute video goes through one version's rules pretty quick:

You have option playing for fixed card trade in values or you can have increasing. I like increasing because it gives power back to some weaker teams later in game. this is also where alliances come in handy, someone gets too powerful, then 2 weaker teams alliance. I love the game on so many different levels, it does take forever in person. I play the version on iPad, but the computer players aren't that great and no alliances.

Was going to say...I was quite the Stratego player in my youth too, but have forgotten most of it.

Also dig Risk, but same - haven't played in 25+ years, long forgotten much of it.

Same boat as you just add another 10yrs for me. I think games such as this are a "lost pleasure" for a family unit.
