2006 F430, EAG manual conversion. It recently started making a medium-high pitched whine. You can hear it in the cockpit but not much when standing outside. It sounds almost as if it's coming from behind the dash, but you can also hear it when popping the frunk.

It only whines when the car is rolling. The whine is steady, it doesn't change pitch with speed. The whine doesn't start immediately when you move though. It kicks in when the car is rolling above 3 or 4 mph and cuts off below that speed. (There's no sound at all if I jack up the car and spin the wheels by hand, but I'm probably not getting them fast enough for this to be a real test.) The sound doesn't seem to be affected by brakes or clutch. It will whine above 3/4 mph regardless of whether the clutch is in or out, or whether I'm on or off the brakes. The whine is both forward and reverse, but slightly louder in reverse. It's the same regardless if I'm driving circles left or right.

I recorded the sound with my phone. I opened the frunk and laid the phone right above the master cylinder access panel. I then rolled backward and forward at low speed. You can hear the whine at 25 seconds, this is when I'm driving forward. Then you can hear it very clearly at 35 seconds, this is when I'm driving in reverse. Then again at :47, :53: 1:01 as I keep going back and forth.

My best guess is it's coming from the transaxle but not sure what could possibly cause it. I'm stumped! Let me know if you have any ideas.

I do still have the ediff. The F1 doesn't turn on when you open the door, which I've assumed is due to reprogramming from the manual conversion, so it's been a little bit out of mind. The whine does sound like a pump, so it makes sense to check the F1. I've been fixated on the sound coming from the front of the car but perhaps it's traveling through the frame.

The pump shouldn't come on more than every 2 mins or so give or take ..

This is constant. Never stops except when coming to a stop.

I think I may have the same actually, also a manual conversion. I'll take a listen next time I take the car out. Could be wrong though.

@oc23 does your F1 pump still turn on when you open the driver door?

This is definitely the type of noise you could easily get used to, but I'm trying to pin it down in case it's a pump running itself out. I'm still brainstorming how I might temporarily disable the F1 pump just to rule it out. Since the sound appears at 3-4 mph, and since I have a manual, it would be fine to go into limp mode while diagnosing. Thinking I could just get in there maybe and pull out some connectors, but haven't found time to go spelunking in there yet.

I'm not helping myself by not having a launch. I've been procrastinating due to the overwhelming number of available models. I noticed that Dan put out a video on OBDs so maybe that'll help.

I have that sound too, but it's very faint. I had to listen hard to hear it. I don't think my F1 pump turns on when opening the door.

Just to update for posterity and for anyone following along, the whine in question is coming from my RHS throttle body. I discovered that the whine can be heard with the engine off if the accelerator pedal is held down and the key is put into #2 position. It sounds like coil whine and there's also some random clicking. I haven't noticed any problems with the throttle but probably it's going bad. When I get some free time I'll remove it and take it apart to diagnose it.

Meanwhile, I think the reason I thought I heard the whine from behind the dash is because there's another whine of the exact same pitch coming from behind the dash! Same pitch but lower volume. This whine is coming off of some kind of motor that is running behind the dash. The motor is impossible to miss, sounds like a hard drive and comes on in key #1 and #2 positions. I can hear the same motor in the videos from this other thread (https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/ticking-sound-heater-now-not-working-video.632023/) - you can start to hear it at 0:10 (behind all the clicking) though if you have old man's ears like me you have to turn the volume way up to hear it. I think that whatever this is, it's probably harmless, but for the life of me I can't figure out where it's coming from. I've gotten my head down below the dash and it's coming from the hvac/radio area. I've pulled those fuses, but the motor still runs. In fact, I've pulled about half of all the fuses and haven't found whatever circuit this thing is on. There's nothing that I can see in the FSM either that looks like a motor in this spot. I definitely also have the stuck vent clicky problem too, so I'm going to end up back there anyway. Maybe it's related.

Finally, Dominick did step me through testing the e-diff, and while it wasn't the cause of the whine, we determined it's not working properly either. Probably the solenoid. Dominick's got a great diagnostic procedure and I feel like I understand the system much better now.

I guess the recirculation pump just under the car below the center of the dash wasn't it ?

Or a tiny fan on a after market radio /amp

    Just guessing sorry

I pulled the recirculation pump fuse and the motor sound continued on. Also tried pulling radio and radio amp fuses to no avail. But the radio is aftermarket so a fan is still a possibility, maybe wired into some other circuit. I will eventually get inside and figure it out.

(I just spent an hour reading woeful tales of 360 throttle bodies and it makes me grateful to have a 430.)

well, since you are into pulling fuses, perhaps keep pulling fuses until the noise stops, then go digging from there..
