I mounted a halotron fire extinguisher to a carpeted board strapped to the spare tire on my 328. It’s solid as heck. Anybody see downsides to this that I might be overlooking? Because I am tall and need two hands to extricate myself from the cockpit (sort of a graceful reverse limbo / karate kick maneuver coupled with a full body heave), it’s easier/quicker for me to access the unit from this location than having it mounted in front of the passenger seat.

Only downside I can think of is that it won’t be accessible after a front end collision that buckles the hood. But there are collision scenarios that would cause access issues almost anywhere I suppose, including those that affect the cockpit. Anyhow, I want to make sure I am not overlooking something that makes this a really dumb idea. Thanks.

I have a 9 lb Halon extinguisher behind my passenger seat. It is not clamped down.

It is better than not having one in the car at all. In with you is better but it's not hurting anything where it is there, that is for sure

I'm using "Element" extinguishers. I carry one in each of my cars. They usually will fit into the glovebox or into a door pocket. Jay Leno Likes them:

I don't think you need to worry about access to it in the event of a front end collision, because fires are caused by fuel and all of the fuel is in the back of the car. In other words, you won't need it if you get hit in the front. It's rear engine collisions you need to worry about, as well as fuel leaks, and in both cases you can get to the FE easily enough where you have it. I hate having extinguishers mounted in plain view in front of the passenger seat.

That's the best solution I've seen yet. Awesome.

I'm tall and my GTB seat is all the way back. But I have an extinguisher roughly the same size rigid mounted behind the passenger seat.

Looks as good as any. I have the passenger seat mount. But in the case of a serious fire, I'm stepping back and letting the insurance deal with it.

The two potential issues I see is
    1) Opening the hood. it can be a PITA, IMHO
    2) Heat?

oh, and if there is a front end collision, would it rupture & maybe explode?

I have one mounted in the same place in close to the same fashion as yours as a secondary backup. Unlike most people I mounted my primary extinguisher in front of the driver's seat because #1 I'm the only one who drives the car so the seat never gets moved and #2 I don't want any of my passengers accidentally ripping their ankle open getting in or out of the car or having problems adjusting their seat forwards or back because of a protruding extinguisher under their seat. It does not interfere in any way with my operation of the vehicle.

My philosophy towards extinguishers might be different than others as well. I have experienced an engine fire caused by a detached fitting to a hydraulic pump on my Land Rover. The fire started out small and could easily be put out if I had had an extinguisher - I didn't. Fortunately for me the roaming county roadside assists guys just happened to be behind me on that day and they did have an extinguisher so the Discovery is still with me but I had visions of being on the six o'clock news standing next to a towering column of black smoke filmed from a helicopter. But as far as I'm concerned if you can't pop the bonnet open, calmly walk forward, grab the extinguisher and put out the nescient fire then it's probably best to walk away and not die. In other words, following a collision where there is spilt fuel and fire unless it's a dire life or death situation it's not time to cosplay being a fireman.

+1 one element extinguisher in each door pocket. Can’t even see it in the pocket and plenty of room for other doodads left over.

I have the Element one too. One in my door pocket. Fits perfect. If it needs more than 50 seconds of extinguishing then I will let it burn and collect insurance.

Those Element units are impressive, I think I'll buy a few for all our cars.

Not a bad idea. I would have mounted two as it looks like you have the space. The extinguisher is pretty small and Ferraris burn well. Also, one day you might use it to help another motorist. Having a second that is still functional would give piece of mind. You know, Murphy's Law and all that...
