I just had the thought a few moments ago that it'd be great to have a Ferrari repair wiki that the fchat community built. So instead of having to search through old threads to hopefully find information on what your trying to do, and then fear getting the dreaded 'this is a repost, try search' reply to a new thread, you could instead go to the Wiki and then say, pick the car, pick the system, pick the part, and if somebody has already done the job, see the repair procedure and after you're done go back and add any hints, tricks, gotchas or whatever. If nobody had written anything, you could then pose questions to fchat, and afterwards be the the first to write it up.

I'd think this would be especially useful immediately for commonly asked questions like, "What kind of oil should I use?", "How do I bleed the cooling system on my 308?", or "Do these compression test numbers sound ok?" but eventually would have the potential to be an incredibly detailed and complete resource.

Anyway, sound like a good idea to anybody else, or am I just being goofy as usual? :D

That's a fantastic idea! This is the perfect theme for a wiki. Surprised it wasn't thought of before!!! Brilliant!

Great! I'll start work on creating one. May not actually get any real contributions in the end, but it's cheap enough to try, and worth a shot! I'll go grab the domain ferrarirepairwiki.com.

I may be able to host it for free if you are looking for that. Let me know via PM.

    hey jeremy,

I once got as far as trying to figure out which wiki package would work the best. If you've been down this road before, which wiki sw are you considering?

I was thinking you want to build a structured site that you defined the top level framework (e.g. in this case, models of cars I guess), then people are able to add topics/procedures, preferably with subtopics/hierarchy (e.g. major service/replace cam seals), and ideally have page templates so you get some consistency and all the desired info (e.g. tools needed, disassembly, reassembly, torque specs, how to screw up, etc).

anyone suggest wiki sites that would be good examples? Anyone a wiki contributor and comment on what they like/dislike about the UI?

I was mostly looking at twiki.org (I'm biased towards perl and away from storing stuff in databases), but as usual got distracted by other projects.

Hey Phil, I knew I couldn't have been the first to have thought of it! I agree with your idea of a basic framework. That's pretty much what I was thinking as well. The only other initial critical thought I had was that we'd need to store the data with multiple independent people, so that nobody could ever steal the data and go commercial with it, as I've seen before with community generated data.

I'm not much one for using perl for web stuff, always found it a bit messy compared to PHP. So I was going to start off by playing with MediaWiki and see how that worked out. Matt, I appreciate the offer for hosting, and I'll talk to you about it more later. For now I'm was just going to put it up on my crappy $4/month hosting so I could play around with it.

I think Rob had something like that here a while back but nobody was using it so it went away. If y'all are interested in having it be a part of FC maybe send him a PM with a link to this thread and ask him to start the Wiki back up. It's a great idea IMHO

I think it's a great idea and I would love to see it and contribute to it. We really need one of these and it would dramatically cut down on the same question appearing over and over again.
