Anybody use Hardi Board siding on their house?

Want to put new siding on my house and I'm not into vinyl. Has anybody used this product?

 

We have Hardi Board on our house and we are satisfied, been on the house for at least 15yrs now I believe.

 

My partner used it and loves it. I wish I had it. I have clapboard and if you don't keep up with it it will rot. Among other benefits, Hardi board won't rot I understand.

 

Garage I built 3 years ago, all Hardiplank and panels. I'm very pleased.

It comes with a 15 year warranty on the paint. Has anybody experienced any wear in less time then that?

 

Building a house is one of my goals and I have researched every aspect of the build in great detail. When it comes to siding, the best product in this category imo, is Nichiha Sierra Premium Shake. Much thicker and tougher than Hardiboard, also a lot better looking.

 

Is it made as a overlap plank?

 

If you mean do you snap your lines starting at the bottom and nail one row of planks and then place the next row over the top of them for runoff (function) and shadow line reveal (look) all the way up the side of your house? Then Yes. 8' long and 9 1/4" high planks.

My computer monitor is sitting on a sample of it that I have had for years. Not only what I have said already but on contractor forums years ago the reviews were best for this. I would advise doing all do diligence, because my project has been on a back burner and I have no idea how the financial collapse and housing implosion have affected this industry or company in particular.

If this is new construction and you want any more info just say so as the siding is just 1 piece of a complete system.

 

Our house was built with the POS masonry board and has since been replaced with James Hardie board all the way around. We are satisfied with the product but had to change contractors early in the process because we were not satisfied with their work. I believe the installation is very important with these products.

 

I'm getting estimates now. I've seen the product installed on a number of home and I like the way it looks. Quotes seem to be coming in around 40k. They all seem to have about 20 square, but I have a ton of windows in the house that will need trim work.

 

That sounds a little high but in the right neighborhood. Make sure you understand the provisions of the warranty completely.

 

The warranty I spelled out pretty clearly. Manufacturer stands behind it for 15 years on the finish etc.. Everything I've read about the Hardi company seems positive. My son is an architect and he's doing some research on it now too.

 

My dad put it on his house on lake Michigan about 9 years ago and has held up very well. Stands up to 90+ degrees in the summer and -30 in the winter. Has a couple of boards lose color. Replaced without problem under warrenty. We have since put it on our home and lake house. Very pleased with the product

 

we used copper siding. develops a nice green patina. no maintenance required.

have it on my house which was built in 2008. no sign of ware and no problems. we got the gray color - came pre-painted but I had the builder put a "field coat" on.

I used it five years ago and so far it's great.

 

Improper installation, which can be many things, can and will void the warranty. We fired the first installer for this reason.

 

I've only taken estimates from their certified installers. Hopefully that should negate that issue.

 

My previous employer used prefinished Hardi on a 200+ unit apt complex and several months later the bldgs looks like cheetahs and zebras, i.e. spotted and striped. The problem was the touch-up paint used at joints, replacement boards, etc. Though the touch-up paint matched when it was applied, it aged/faded/did something at a different rate than the factory finish thus the spots and stripes that appeared over time. Supposedly the subcontractor followed the touch-up procedures but the general contractor had to repaint every bldg (I'm not sure who ultimately paid the bill).

No issues with the product otherwise but this might be a good idea if you go prefinished...

...but doublecheck the impact (if any) to the prefinish warranty.

The seams don't look to good either.

 

I used Hardi Board Shakes on the home I built 7 years ago and am very pleased.

 

Just to note with Hardie Plank, I have seen it many times (own a pressure washing company) the factory paint will get "sunburnt". The pigment breaks down and leaves and chalky oxidation on the surface. If agitated with a brush or pressure washer it will look horrible, trust me. We have restored and removed oxidation on some Hardie with our methods before but it is pretty difficult to get it to look new again.

 

We have it on our house, and about 98% of the houses in our neighborhood have it. Overall I am happy. There are a couple of small spots in one area where the caulking around a window leaked and allowed moisture behind the board, and the color changed a bit in about a 2 square foot area on a couple of boards. It is not in a visible place so really doesn't bother me, and I haven't bothered looking into replacement. I would probably just touch up paint it if anything. There are one or two houses in the neighborhood (out of over 100) where I have noticed some "chalking" of the finish. These seem to be on the darker houses, so maybe there is a correlation there?

As others have said, like in anything the quality of the installation is important. Even the best material can be screwed up by someone doing a sloppy job with it. I would stress using only the very best caulking at seams and joints. Spend as much money as you need to there, that's not the place to cut corners.
