Dealers give varying lengths to how long the waiting list is...
People are flipping them for 7K and more over list....

I know a guy who has been on "the list" for 1.5 years, his name is supposedly coming up next month and does not want it, not interested in flipping. Says I can have his spot. I spoke in general terms with the dealer if I can assume someone elses spot in line, they say no.
So, if I tell my friend exactly what I want, he specs out the car, we give the additional 3K, how would the dealer stop me from buying the car when it comes in? (especially if my friend comes with)

Yes you can buy someones spot. If you don't believe me check ebay there are normally 2-3 "spots" on there.

I was on the list for a while but wimped out haha. I have since driven one and it is a great car. When the vvti kicks in it is just like turbo boost. The car speeds up quite rapidly. I had read this and kinda laughed, but it really does go from rapid to haulin a$$ in a hurry.

Check out www.elisetalk.com it is a great site.

I've had my Elise since late September or early October (don't remember exactly...). It's a great car.

As far as buying spots... the dealer could definitely deny you the ability to buy the car if they wanted to. They have a contract with your friend, to sell a car to <your friend's name>, not <your name>. Your friend should call them and verify that they will allow you to have his spot before assuming.

I'll give you a call tomorrow...

You should try to head out to Fox Valley Motorcars on Saturday for their open house... I'll be there (possibly with my car), and they have quite a few Elises for sale @ MSRP now.

Just have your friend buy the car and "sell" it to you a few days later. You may have to pay taxes on the car but at least you will get your hands on it.

You can always explain the situation to a buyer should you decide to sell. If you keep all records of the transaction you can show the other guy had the car for 10 minutes. I doubt it would hurt resale.
