I'm thinking about buying a new unlocked motorola slvr from ebay. I don't want to get one from cingular because I'm an old AT&T wireless customer and if I get a new phone, they'll make me switch to cingular and I'll loose certain benefits (like a 7pm peak time). The problem is, I hear some of the features (like text messaging or internet) don't work when you buy an unlocked phone and just swap sim cards. Anyone have experience with this?

I'm an AT&T refugee as well, but I actually prefer Cingular now. I was having real problems with reception, late messages, etc.

and I am/was in the same situation as you are. I will make teh move to Cingular when I have no other option (it sucks that their plans are so much worse). Text messaging works fine. I did not have an Internet/Data package before with AT&T so I do not know if web operation is affected. I just popped in my sim and everything worked fine.

While I did not get mine from him, there is a guy on 6speedonline that sells unlocked Razors at very good prices. Check the merchandise for sale section and you will see his posts.

Ask over at howardforums.com a lot of guys over there buy unlocked phones exclusively. They have sponsors there that sell nothing but unlocked phones so I would think everything would work but you will be able to find the info on those forums.

At&t GSM may have been moved to the cingular blue section ( if they have organized it that way)

    I bought phones twice.

First one was really chic, bought it when I was going abroad to Paris last semester. I had the coolest phone outta everyone there which is key. It was kind of cheap and was actually a pain in my ass to use. But it looked damn cool.

The second one I bought, didnt work out. I got an email from eBay a few days later explaining that the seller was part of some world wide scam...making fake cellphones? Anyway, my point is, there are legit sellers and there are legit scammers. be careful.

Just bought an unlocked motorola very, very recently, I'm in the exact same boat you are (at&t corporate plan, very competitive rates). I just swapped the sim cards, and so far all of the features, text message, internet, etc. have worked just fine. Go with a reputable dealer and everything should be fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The guy I'm considering buying from has well over 2,000 sales and a 99.7% feedback score, so I'm pretty sure it's legit. The main thing I'm worried about is that it's the world version of the slvr and requires a US adapter for the charger, which it comes with. I'm just hoping this doesn't conflict in some way with my AT&T sim card and cause the phone not to work. The seller makes it very clear in the ad that if the phone is functional but doesn't work with the buyers service, then the buyer is SOOL.

JJB and lateralus, are your phones world versions or US versions? If they are world versions, how is that working out for you? Are all the menus in english?
