WOW. That is all I can say. I don't have a ton of time to go into detail, but the words EVIL EMPIRE come to mind.

Long story short, wrote an appraiser a check. They entered the MICR # wrong (1 digit wrong) and now I am getting collection calls from TRS Recovery Services. The appraisal company and I were both on the phone with them for over THREE HOURS trying to get it resolved last night to no avail.

"We don't see anything wrong with your account but you could end up with negative check writing status if it comes back," they told me. Huh? I write my lawn guy a check and that's it these days...so F-off. "Do you report this to the credit bureaus?" I ask. "No...we cannot" I'm told. This was confirmed by someone else as well. So I am getting collection calls but nothing is showing up in their system? WTF?

The only reason we got through to a HUMAN BEING there is because the appraisal company is a merchant and they have a special phone #. As a consumer, forget it. An endless maze of prompts and dead ends.

I cannot imagine how their business model will hold up with a future full of Billpay and debit cards. Last thing they need to be in indifferent to the consumer.

Long story short I was at Circuit City and wrote a check for $2,800 and some change . I usually never write checks in stores I either pay cash or charge but this time I wrote the check. It was declined. I asked the manager to get telecheck on the phone since I knew the check was good. The telecheck rep told me that They didn't have any negative info on me but they didn't have any info since I rarely wrote checks in stores so they were declining the check. I told the store manager what they said he spoke to them and he ok 'd the check anyway. But yes telecheck sucks.

That is scary that this can happen from someone punching in a wrong number. I thought that things with checks are either done electronically/scanned or at the bank. To think some company can give you "negative check writing status" and they aren't your bank is scary.

I only use about 5 checks a year so I don't really know about what is involved. I've seen the little stickers for them at the checkout stands.
I have a friend that writes a check for everything she can and I was thinking about using them more for local things but I think I'll just stick with a credit card.

They would probably decline my check too then. Three of the checks I've written in the last year were sent out to pay magazine subscriptions. I never use them in stores. I guess I can't now. lol

Maybe they are trying to force more and more people to stop using checks because of people writing bad checks.

Probably for a smaller amount you would be OK. I was trying to write a almost $3K check so I'm sure that played a major part but still I believe they have access to the account history and I have had the same checking acct. for almost 20 years.

That would be silly on their part - kind of destructive to their business, really.

Yeah, it's spooky to think these companies can do all this crap to you and there's nothing you can do about it.
