I would like a little less restriction and better sound but not too interested in a full exhaust. I'm in a state without emissions and curious how the 458 would sound with straight pipes and the stock exhaust.

Also - what is the best sounding straight pipe?

All cat delete straight pipes sound the same. They are all 3" SS piping. If someone tells you one brand sound better / different than another they are full of it.

Best sounding...to whom? I prefer an exhaust that helps scavenge exhaust gasses and add's power with a tune for reliability 1st and power second.

Pipe material, pipe size, do the pipes go from one size up to another and back down, X pipe or not? Overall foundation of the sound is somewhat similar but harmonics and frequency can play a big part due to different exhaust designs.

Also recorded sound you would listen to on your computer will sound very different in person. Microphones ( outboard or on phone or camera), recording limiter and compression, play back system and speakers all color the actual sound as does real life volume and how the ear reacts to that.

I think with no cats, you'll get a CEL as the ECUs will be looking for control signals

Whistle tips are what you need. It's a very cost effective modification that's very easily reversable.

Here is an audio clip with a full Ipe exhaust with 200 cell cat at cruising speed. I believe the straight pipes drone. Someone with straight pipes should be able to answer that part.

I removed the cats in 2014 Spider and installed straight pipes. I retained the OEM exhaust and OEM headers.(Please note that I am in Australia and subject to different EPA laws)..
You will get CEL so need to deal with that (I installed a Capristo Wizard).
I also installed a Forza valve controller which was a good investment and allows your choice of open/close valves.

    Result
    - substantial improvement in sound as to a much higher pitched scream (with valves open) which I was very happy with and was the result that I was looking for (also means it is substantially louder).
    - with valves closed, sound very little difference (if any) in change from original sound (which is a good result as it remains quiet),
    - I have found no droning,
    - you do have a stronger smell due to no cats but not intrusive to me,
    - I found a difference in performance as to acceleration (seat of the pants - not dyno) and I felt it quite noticeably which I was very happy with.

Hope the above is of assistance.
