I know it's not uncommon in the older gen F cars with aged filler necks and lines, but what about the 430's? I was at Shell this morning filling up (was at 2-3 bars), about half way through flames burst out from the driver side engine vent (on the side of the car) and from the engine compartment vents around the filler neck. It must have been fumes igniting (car was at operating temp when i got there) because it didn't burn.. just ignited then went out.

I didn't smell any gas fumes while the car was filling up. Maybe the venting system messed up on the filler neck, or the gas pump handle/seal was screw up? I already made an appointment with the dealer to have them inspect it to make sure everything is kosher, just wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

The car is an 05 with about 8k miles. It has aftermarket cats, but the heat shields above them are still in place.

Heard back from the dealer this afternoon. Turns out one of the T'd vacuum lines connecting the gas tank to the charcoal canister was torn off, letting it vent into the engine compartment (yikes).

You guys might want to check your cars out, it was pretty scary when the fumes ignite. :D

I'm not sure if I tore the line when I was installing my exhaust system + cats or not, but it definitely shouldn't have failed due to age. Hope everyone has a fun and safe Christmas!

The dealer wasn't sounding like they were planning to cover it. He said it's going to cost around $400-600 to fix (not sure what the breakdown is for parts/labor), and that he's having trouble getting the part since FNA is out for the holidays or something.

Good to know that everything went ok!

Something similar happened to me. In my case was that the F1 power unit was leaking oil and I did not notice it (Was my fault for no check the oil level). All the oil was accumulating over the bumper but I cant saw it because of the gravel cover. After I install my test pipes and my after market exhaust I went to a close trip. While I was driving I notice a small quantities of smoke coming out of the engine and I thought that the reason was the WD40 drooping over the pipes. When I pull over and lift the engine deck I saw flame coming out from the bottom of the F1 power unit. I was scare as hell! lucky I had a fire extinguishers and kill the fire.
After I took an eye everywhere I notice a big accumulation of old oil all over the heat shield under the power unit. Because the test pipes and the exhaust that heat shield got very very hot and a small piece of plastic strap was in fire over the accumulated oil. Nothing bad happened because I notice it on time. I fix the leak and now all is ok.

That is why I really understand your situation and how you felt.

still baffles me how a lot of these cars have these problems and are hardly driven. Not offending any of you here who may actually drive it had or not. Just seems to me if you were to make a car that does this, and after putting a few hundred on it, you should be concerned about a line leaking that was done by hand and inspected and checked. I mean it has f1 shift, but its not a f1 car.. and even then, arent they getting more strict on regulations for f1? Maybe they should apply more to their consumer cars than f1 lol. Wont keep me from buying one or a plethora later. Just means I gotta be Shurlock Holmes on the quest for a good time in a Ferrari and discover problems or up coming clues

i hate filling up gas in ferraris.
u have to 1st get two cloths between the handle and the bare paint to prevent chipping pint. Then u stick the nozzle inside and pull the trigger, no go.
then u pull it out a little then its fine. But if u just let it sit there, it will FALL OUT! so u have to constantly hold the nozzle until its full.
Thats what happened to me today and gas was leaking on my fenders, rims...etc. Scary if it went on the engine or snaked its way to the exhaust, then u will see me in the news!! scary.
Lucky no paint chipped when the nozzle fell to the ground otherwise i be furious.

interesting.. never would have thought. I hate going to unknown gas stations on trips outside of the norm area. One time I couldn't even get the thing to fill in my q45 i have. stuck all the way in press handle gas click.. less pull on handle same thing moved it about in and out still nothing haha. had to put crap gas in but only enough to get to another station. My Q45 is temperamental as well. totally notice differences on gas, and god for bid parking it out side over night somewhere when its cold.. it will not like you the next day lol good thing its a daily driver!
