You can check reviews of the Nikon D300 and Canon 40D here:

    D300: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond300/

    Canon 40D: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/

In my opinion, if you have Nikon gear, I don't think it's worth it to switch to Canon as you'll have to buy all new equipment (lenses, etc...).

If you find the D300 too expensive, you can look at the D90 or even the D200...

By the way, the Nikon D300 was the "camera of the year" by Photopop: http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/4857/camera-of-the-year-2007-nikon-d300.html

I don't have much "gear" only D40 w/ 18-55mm and a 70-300mm. I am disappointed in Nikon for the quality, my D40 is not holding up as well as I thought, when in program mode it under and over exposes constantly, it can be corrected in PS but I really hate to have to go through every picture and correct it, plus it really never looks exactly right. I love the D300 and have very much considered it, but I hate to use mediocre glass on that level of camera and a $1600 body plus a couple decent lenses and I am looking at $3k which I just can't afford. The video recording is putting me off on the D90, they seem to be stuffing as much novelty options as they can and aren't concentrating on the actual camera.

I guess that nowadays you have to take in consideration that cameras, because of all the electronic gizmos, are less reliable. I used to have a canon that went dead on me too...

For the D300 you can check ebay for multiple lenses (make sure to choose VR) and body for less than $2000... I currently use a D200 that is very robust. Everyone I know and all the reviews I've read are saying thet the D300 is WAY superior to the D200 especially in high ISO... Do not compare the DXXX series to the DXX series as the DXXX are much better built (semi-pro)...

Absolutely the D300 is better than the D200, but if you already have the D200 and the D300 is a stretch financially then stay with the D200. I went and played with a 30D and I really liked it, very fast, that and a 28-135mm was going to cost me $1k but I can get a 40D with the same lens for $1100 on Amazon so I really think the 40D is the best bet as long as I don't run into anyone who has had problems. I really need to have it by the end of October (Track Day) and even if I went with the D90 they won't be on the shelves until at least November.

Actually, I'll wait for prices to come down a bit and will probably get the D300, or even better the D700. I've own Nikon Reflexes forever (I have the amazing F2) and lenses. For the last year or so Nikon have upped the ante in digital reflexes (against the current leader Canon) with amazing machineries like the D300, D700 and D3.

my 20D only had the error 99 issue once every 200 snaps +- after the first 60,000 snaps. I'm about 15,000 into the 40D now. it is faster and more intuitive en every way. Custom functions are better too.

I always hated Canons because how they felt, but I knew enough to try out anything but a Rebel and wow did the 30D feel good. It is unfortunate that Nikon can't deliver a camera with some good speed to it,well at least anything less than $1500, Canon has always been on top of the sports game and I guess that is how it is going to stay.

I am a happy owner of a 40D, but still very new to photography. As such, I can't offer much more then that I like it. My first camera was an XTI which was my crash course on DSLR, but I played with a 40D and a 5D and loved how the 40D felt. I chose the 40D over the 5D because I just couldn't justify spending the extra money when my glass collection was quite lacking.

Having lots of fun with it and looking forward to many more clicks... until the 5D successor comes out.

My 7 million dollar home (i love this bag) now has:
Canon 100-400L - on loan from my father while he is in Japan for 5 months.
Canon 28-135IS - My father has it with him.
    Canon 50mm F/1.4 - I LOVE THIS LENS
Canon 10-22mm for the need to go wide
Sigma 24-70 - my everyday lens until I get the 28-135 gets back so I can trade them both in for a 24-70L.

Here is a shot that I took in Acapulco, Mexico. I've got plenty more.

I want a 50mm but I couldn't because of lack of AF on my D40. What is it like shooting cars with it? Do you need to stand far back?

Shooting cars is the reason I bought 10-22 and also look forward to a lower range "L."

The 50mm is a great lens that forces you to get creative with composure. At a car show, the 50mm is almost worthless for getting the entire car because by the time you got back far enough, someone was standing in front. It is a great lens for taking close ups/ sections or the whole car if you are in a lot or have the ability to position yourself better.

Here is a for instance.. Standing about 2-3 feet from the rope at the Chicago Auto Show.

There is no reason to buy a 50 for shooting cars. The only reason you would want a 50 is because you can get them with a really low aperture (f1.8 f1.4 and f1.2 for Canon) for portraits and low light stuff. As for you, I would recommend the 28-135 or if you wanted a little wider you could go 17-85.

Other than for shooting car details, and blur everything else in the picture. I love doing that.
    Thanks

Well, actually if you put the 28-135 in a 1.6x crop camera like the 40D or any Rebel the FOV would be equal to 44-216mm because it is an EF lens and not an EF-S. So you would not be getting that wide with it. Although I like it and I also got it with my 40D plus a Sigma 10-20mm for shooting cars and landscapes.
