The power mirror switch on my 1986 328 GTS has gone bad. The local shop couldn't repair it, and I can't find a replacement anywhere. I've tried Ricambi, TRutlands and Ferrari parts UK. None have one or know where I can get one. I was hoping someone here may have an extra one, know a of a car someone might be parting out (as if!) or knows of a company that can repair these switches.

I've read through the board, and saw where some of the switches were interchangeable with a mid-80's BMW switch, but that's not the case with the 328. That only works with the later 308 switches.

Any help, as always, is much appreciated!

AFAIK, the 328 mirror switch is un-obtainium as a new part. Doesn't cross over to any BMW like the 308 switch. I have done quite a lot of research looking at every BMW model switch in comparison, to no avail. Do a search here, there are several threads.

Is anyone working on making these available again?

Seems like with 7000 cars out there DMaury can't be the only one with a broken switch.

Does anyone do repairs? I mean, I can readily find places to ship guages, steering racks, water pumps, radios, etc... but not switches.

You might check with guys who work on the cars -- Ferrarioldman, Lolaman and others here. We're somewhat blessed in So Cal with a lot of Ferrari shops that seem to have NOS stuff in the attic from past jobs.

Thanks for the tip! I just shot them an email, so we'll see. So, when they did yours, did they repair your switch, or replace it?

I vaguely recall opening one of those up and cleaning it. There was a couple ball bearings - mebbe 4, springs, and the usual metal that the balls roll onto to make the connections.

Eurospares had some switches on ebay a couple of weeks ago. They hold a lot of parts so would be worth an email to Claudio - he knows everthing about Ferraris.

Well, still no luck on obtaining a replacement switch, and I've checked everywhere except calling Ferrari dealerships.

Anyway, I decided to take the switch apart and see what I can do. Attached are some pictures on the switch out of the car, and opened up. Seems a fairly simple design, but I'm a bit puzzled. The black square piece seen in the picture as the circled part, doesn't have any metal in/on it that I would think should be making contact with the circuit plate. There is one small metal ball in one of the holes that rolls in and out when you tilt the square piece, but I don't see how this ball will make contact either. Is this switch missing a plate or something? Is it missing some metal contacts that should be pressed into the black square plastic piece?

Here's another thought. I know that some of the 308 switches were the same used on some BMW's of the period. I've since found that the 328 switch was unique to the car. Is there a similar switch, while not the same on exterior appearance, which may have the same internals that I could switch over?

    Thanks.

    D. Maury,

You are missing several parts to your switch. Once opened, there are 7 springs, 6 very small ball bearings, and 1 metal piece (slider).

In your picture, the only thing I see is the larger spring, the one that holds the slider. Where are the others?

I noted the same thing. I made the mistake of taking mine apart and the parts flew everywhere. Fortunately I was able to put it all back together, but it was a biatch.

Sorry I can't help track down the part, but I do have a switch question maybe Msouza or Alberto can answer.

Just today I accidently took my switch apart. I have the 7 springs, 6 ball bearings, and the slider plate. I put everything back together carefully and it now does not work.

Are there any other parts in this mix? When I puled the switch from the door panel I somehow also found two other small pieces; a small 3mm long 0.5mm dia (like a mechanical pencil lead) and a 4mm long metal bracket thing. Are these bonus pieces that I found or do they belong in the switch?

Thanks for any advice -- and good luck to you Dmaury (I may soon also need another switch myself).

    Mike,

Can you post a picture of the parts? The only metal bracket piece I remember is about 4mm wide and 12mm long.

The two sm parts on the right side of the photo are the ones in question. Thought I put it all back together correctly, but it dosn't work now. Are these little pieces part of the switch?

    Thanks again

    Mike,

The metal piece (bracket) is part of the switch. It mounts on top of the larger spring inside the switch. This part is the contact for right/left switch. There is a larger spring that goes in a hole on the base of the switch and the bracket is mounted on top of spring inside a channel on the base.

As for the "pencil lead" I never seen that part before. As far as I know, that is not a part of the mirror control switch.

I have an opened switch in my hands right now, that I'm restoring it, and I dont see that part.

I've been looking for this switch for years. If you find more than one, I would appreciate a heads up.

    Thanks.

Didn't Ferrari 'borrow' some Fiat switchgear for the 328/TR? Maybe it's used on one of the European market Fiats??

Thanks for the advice! Without a "chiltons" type 328 repair manual, it's help from FChat that allows me to keep this thing up and running.
When I get the chance I'll reinstall the "bracket" piece you mentioned. Thanks very much - I'll bet that's all I needed.
    Thanks.

    Hi all,

Is there anybody who can make a picture of the place of the bearings and the strings of the inside of the switch please?
I have only 5 bearings and two strings...

    Cheers,

I actually managed to find a backup mirror switch in my search to repair the one in my car. I found a NOS one that's currently in the 328, and picked up an extra switch from a car that was being parted. I never even tested it to see if it worked. AS the switch is working fine that's in the car now, I may put the extra one up on eBay if it is a functional switch.
