2012 California, shut the car off the other day, e-brake did not engage and "brake" icon illuminated in the dash. Took it to the dealer, they said the e-brake cable itself had broken/snapped. ~$2500 + labor for a new module/cable. Has this happened to anyone before? Just curious if I'm bad luck or this is common. About 16k miles on the car right now.

John, the brake should not fail with just 16K miles and this is the first time I have heard of such a failure.

The mechanical cables themselves (there are 2) cost USD 200 for the pair (each side is different). However, the complete actuator module costs about USD 1,050. So it depends on what they are replacing and how much labour is involved. I would ask the dealer to break down the service quotation to see exactly what you are paying for each part and number of hours of labour. They may or may not charge a bit more for the parts.

Be sure to also ask for the defective parts to be saved and given back to you so you can inspect and learn for yourself just what went wrong. Please share with FChat if you feel it would be helpful.
