A friend was just offered this car, an 80/81 (info varies) silver over red 400i w/ all kinds of trunk candy.

The price, the sales details, all seem WAY too good to be true.

The car is said to be in Portugal, w/ a Florida title, but wearing CA plates in the photos (!!!???).

    Allegedly:

    1980 Ferrari 400i
    34,236 miles on it
    Clean Florida title

Anyone know this car and the history?

    Thanks.

I just found the thread on the car, last listed in FL.

Am I the only one who finds it hard to believe someone would ship it to Europe, where the market pricing is STRONGER and then try to sell it back to the US at a fraction of the last listed sale price (lower even than the 2012 price)?

Give us the link and perhaps one of us knows the details.

As with ALL online purchases you should never send any funds until the car has been inspected by a trusted source. And for ANY 400/412 I would do a PPI. Far too complicated a car to buy based on the "Seller's Description".

Oh- one more thing- there's no such thing as a "Cheap Ferrari".

I know the car and commented on it previously when it was offered for sale. It did wear CA plates while it was here in Palm Beach (FL). I didn't think it was the caliber of car to warrant its previous asking price of $62K, and I cannot imagine someone purchasing it for around that figure and then attempting to sell it less than 6 months later for any amount close to what they paid?

This sounds incredibly suspect and I would steer your friend to purchase one where he could check it out himself. Has he been a previous Ferrari owner, is he in the market for a 400? Or was he approached by someone needing cash (in Portugal) and this seller just so happens to have 34845?

Turned out to be a full-on scam attempt it appeared to be. Car allegedly in Portugal, but the only photos the seller would provide were from that last bay listing in Florida.

And, he was asking 1/2 of what the car was last listed for.

Oh, I know the only thing more expensive than a Ferrari is a cheap Ferrari.

I'm closing in on my own 400i re-fresh. I'll have put 2X of the purchase price into it, but 1) the seller was honest about the known flaws, I've only found one thing he did not know/disclose (some curb impact cracking in the lower facia's connection points) and only one new expensive thing cropped up (the body shop blew the ignition box jump starting the car too many time in the 5 months it was there). End of the day, though, I paid below the 2014 #4 price and the car will be a very solid, fully sorted #2 w/ - hopefully - no surprises, as I've touched every part of this car over the past 12 months.

    Have a great holiday weekend.
