Got to thinking about my next entertainment hardware purchase, and Microsoft Surface came up as an option. I'd like to have a table-based product that the family can use together collaboratively to create, and also be entertained by. But I'm not seeing any 3rd party software support for it, so I'm not up to paying $12,000 for a "photo app" and screen saver - I'll just stick with the iPad otherwise.

Anyone using this product in their home/business? Any compelling reason to buy it?

I believe these are available to businesses only. The purchaser is expected to work with MS to develop their own software specific to their desired application, hence the lack of 3rd party support. Even if they were, so few people can buy a $12k coffee table that there is no market for it anyways.

Enjoy your iPad, wait a few years ;)

just use smoothboard, a wii remote, ir bezel and a rear projector and instant m$ surface for about a hundredth of the cost. i use the wiimote, smoothboard and ir glove to turn all of my regular screens into touchscreens. great for flight sims like dcs a10.

The Microsoft Surface is incredible, but I agree that's it's a business only thing at the moment. They revealed the 2nd version which is thinner, lighter and has improved software too. The new one is light enough to mount on the wall (Minority Report anyone?). I wish I could play with one, they look so cool.

Ironic.. I went to their website to check it out, and after trying to view the video got "sorry but this video is temporarily unavailable." Well, that answers that.. lol

One of the guys that works for me makes a homebrew version that is remarkable to play with... I'll get you in touch with him if you want one.

It's a fraction of the cost and grief of a real one.
