I have a protected MS Word file that I am trying to edit. I used to have an app called Passware that worked great, but I had my pc re-imaged and lost it. I only have this one file to unprotect so I don't feel like paying for a full version. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

ok nevermind, I found the solution....

Here's how to crack it if you are using the newer versions of Word:

If you are using office XP or 2003, you can change the view to HTML-Code using Microsoft Script-Editor by pressing the [Alt]+[Shift]+[F11] key combination.

Search for "Password" and you will find somethimg like this:
    <w:DocumentProtection>ReadOnly</w:DocumentProtection>
    <w:UnprotectPassword>19E8E61E</w:UnprotectPassword>

    To remove the protection:
-Just remowe those two lines, and after saving the document , the protection is gone.

    To remove the password:
-replace the Password, here "19E8E61E", with "00000000", save the Document and close "Script-Editor".

What is MS Script Editor? Is it bundled in MS Office? Is it something you can download freely?

At what stage do you press Alt Shift F11? Can you just open it in MS Script Editor as a garbled file and switch the view with this key combo?

I have a really old pwd protected file that I would like to unlock as well...have long since forgotten the pwd. It was created with Word 2.0.

I just opened the Word document, and then while having the document open I pressed ALT SHIFT F11. That automatically opens the scripts editior (part of the MS Office package). Then I just went to edit>>find and searched for password and then deleted that line of code, saved the file and then re-opened the Word doc. It worked great.

How do you "just open" a doc that is pwd protected? In my case, I get a pwd dialog box and if I don't put in the right pwd, I get a blank doc.

Also, what is MS Script Editor and how do you get it?

This is for a document that is protected (you can open it, but you are not able to edit it). This is not the same as document that has a password when launching it.

I used to have a copy of passware, but I lost it when my PC was re-imaged and I don't feel like buying it. I searched for a free utility, but I couldn't find one.
