Seriously, could the networks be making more out of nothing? I won't go political on this one--it's too easy. But the networks definitely re-introduced us to a term called "Overkill" last night with their unending coverage of the Level 2 storm known as Gustav. It's like the meteorological equivelant of white guilt, where over-reporting on a storm that under-delivered will somehow help right the string of buffoonery that followed after Katrina. How many storm outfits do you think Katie Couric brought? Ooh, there goes that Dollar Store sign blowing away again! And judging by the interviews, some of these networks should have sent dentists instead of prima donna camera barbies.

It's all because of the "Post Katrina Syndrome".

They over-do all storms. But this one is really overkill. And I'm tired of hearing about Katrina.

It's the same thing here in Europe - even after the hurricane had passed New Orleans, they still talked about there still being a "great risk of levee-failure and major flooding, even worse than Katrina". STFU.

I found this website that features 4 local stations in the area:

http://www.maroonspoon.com/wx/gustav.html (You'll have to turn the volumes down for the channels you don't want to hear)

It seems like the local stations aren't doing any overinflating of the situation at all. Just minute by minute coverage of the storm and progress down there. Everything I watched yesterday on those stations was upbeat, positive, and everyone seemed to think this was a relatively mild storm with relatively mild damage certainly compared to Katrina, and also compared to their initial estimates.

    Widespread disgust with cable networks

I won’t even attempt to link to every blogpost or Twitter, but the disgust with the cable networks’ coverage of this storm seems absolute and universal among Louisianans. I keep looking for someone who can find something positive or useful on CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC, but people in the city and across the country are howling at how bad this coverage is.

CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers compared a hurricane to: “It’s just like getting hit with a Ho-Ho - when you get hit with the white part, it’s OK, but when you get hit with the chocolate you get whammed.” (Not a direct quote, but pretty close.) I swear to God. (Jon Stewart, find that clip!)

    WTF?

    That's a horrible analogy.

And the next time a storm does do really bad damage, the comparison is going to immediately go to Katrina. Not how hard Alabama and Mississippi were destroyed, but NO.
