I'm considering purchasing a used Maserati from a private seller in Greece. Has anyone recently arranged to have a car shipped from anywhere in Europe to the US? I'm speaking of a purely private transaction --- not broker, dealer, or factory assisted in any way.

Any idea what the current costs would be --- my US delivery/entry port of destination would be Baltimore (New York would be my backup)?
What is involved as far as customs, import regulations, EPA/DOT paperwork, etc.?
What fees do the US entities charge for import?
Car is a 1997 Euro spec Maser with current French registration ---- any problems I should be aware of? It will be designated as "collector" --- and not registered for street use...

    Thanks

If it's a bargain, just ask why ? Above all all for a car of that price if I consider the cost of shipping..., the price must be very very very low.

And I don't believe in miracles.

Above all in the world of cars.

And why a French reg. car is in Greece ?

Why it's not reg. in Greece ?

Stolen in France ? Non paid loan ? Treasury attempt of cease ?

I can help you and we can begin in making sure the car is "legal".

I can check if the car is OK here in France.

I need a copy of the French documents where are mentionned (it states at the top or at the back, it depends on the version, "certificat d'immatriculation":

    -complete chassis number
    -date of 1st reg.
    -date of current reg.
    -current owner's name,
    -reg. number.

Then, I could send you the link of our official website and you could check that first of all.

    Best regards.

    Pascal.

The car is not a "bargain". I'm buying it overseas because this particular Maserati model (Ghibli II) was never imported in North America --- so you can't find one here.

I've already checked the car out ---- it's completely legitimate. The owner is from Greece, but was licensed to work in France on contract, and he bought the car while he was living and working in France.

Just recently the owner has returned to live in Greece and brought the car back with him. He has decided to sell it so there is no point in going through the process of getting Greek registration for the car. Unless he can't sell it soon, and in that case, he will either register the car in Greece or take it to a broker / concessionaire in France to sell for him.

I've spoken with this guy, and he's honest. And, I've fully verified the car's ownership history and registration status ---- no stories here. Everything is clean, complete, and legal since the car was new from the factory.

So, I appreciate your offer to help me check the car out --- but, that's already taken care of.

I just need to know the process and costs associated with exporting the car to the US. Again, we are not using a broker or a dealer ---- normally these folks would make all the arrangements for me. So, I've got to arrange it all myself --- with the owner's help on his side, of course.

However, have you got the "certificat de situation" ?

The one and only document which can testify all of that.

Have you ever heard of cars declared stolen (e.g. in Italy) some days after they have been sold for exportation ?

Don't you know that we cannot insure anymore in EEC cars bearing plates from another EEC country ?
