O.K. I found an ad with a car for sale. But, there is some "Sweat Equity" involved. It is a Red/Black 1988 328GTS with 26K miles on it. They are asking $24,500.00 for it. Preferably, someone Local looking to get into their first Ferrari. And has some Bodywork knowledge.

I just saw the ad, so, I know absolutely nothing about the car other than it says that it has some Left Front Damage, and comes with most of the parts needed to fix it. I don't know how bad the damage is. But, front body work is really easy to do. (and I won't speculate any further as I really don't know.)

I know, I know....there could be front suspension damage, who knows. But if anyone here is interested. The car is out of state. So, you'd need to travel to look at it. But, if it was just some simple Body damage. At that price, (or a negotiated one...;)) It could really be worth it. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll P/M you with the rest of the information. And you can ask them all about the car.

Hey, maybe it would be a good candidate for a 288GTO Re-Body....?...:)

Hey Bill you could buy this for me and then I'll have a real Ferrari. Then I can rebuild it with a Vette engine and some other mods and can have another half breed cruiser. No serious Frank send me the info. like how to contact and where is it. So who wnats to go on a field trip to inspect this beast.

Won't join you on the field trip, but I could give you tons and tons of pointers on how to do it right. I have studied this long and hard and could probably draw 288GTO plans with my eyes closed. I have pretty much every book and fotograph one possibly needs to make this look right. Heck I even have blueprints for the real engine (although that's not really required here).

Also: A 328 is a MUCH better base for a 288GTO rebody than a 308 as its interior is a LOT closer to the real thing. It needs changes, but not that many. Of course a 328 is also a better base for its superior handling, brakes and power.

Now this has sparked an interest in me. A Ferrari and modify it. This could be cool especially since the GTO is a cool car. I know some other thread listed the company that makes the body panels for the conversion. But then again it's not original so am I setting myself up for punishment?

There are basically two different companies making the body panels. They have a slightly different approach:

    http://www.berlinettamotorcars.com/GTOstylebodyparts.htm

    http://italianauto.com/page5.html

Personally I'd go with Berlinettamotorcars and use their front clip (not their individual fender parts). You basically replace the entire front body with one piece, very racing like.

You set yourself up for punishment, but so what? OTOH you safe a toasted pony, so you deserve some credit. And I'm sure as long as you leave that Maranello engine in there even Huskerbill would help you turn a wrench.

Really. It is already Red with a Black interior. I saw the ad and thought I'd pass it along. I would have liked to have gotten it myself. But, right now, I have a Huge Van. A "regular" Car. And my 308. And, I only have a 2 car garage. (Well, the Van wouldn't fit anyway...) But one side of the garage has the Ferrari. The other side is full of stuff. Nowhere to fit another car in the Garage. And I wouldn't want to leave a Ferrari outside. So, there ya go.....

Well, you could always sell the 308...
    :)

One of the reasons I never moved forward with modding my 308 into a 288GTO was the realization that with the added fenders I couldn't get the car "through the door" so to speak. And I can't rebuild the garage.

Sheesh Billiam, I've been in my room for close to a year now!

Can't I finally come out and play??

Guys and girls, do you realize what doing a proper 288 GTO conversion will cost??

$100k+ and that's on the lean side!! I was going to have it done to one of my cars a few years back, and John Weinberger talked me out of it.

But it would be fun and another challenge. Hey someone else besides the ladies have to play around with something different.

Skip's 100k figure means doing it perfect: Upgrade and turn the engine 90 degrees and lengthen the chassis.

If you leave the engine and chassis as is (which is what the two sites I mentioned below suggest) it will cost much less: About 10k for the new body, another 10k for the installation (unless done by yourself), 5k for paint and another 5k for interior mods.

Hello, Skip! Great to see you back! Yes, you are most definitely right about that, if you want to do a correct version of a 288GTO. Heck, there's been an ad showing one For Sale in Hemmings for MONTHS. It is at www.fantasyjunction.com And though the Performance factor looks to be there. IMO, it looks like crap. It has a totally funky wing. 2 Big air scoops. The headlights don't even work! It is neither a nice 288GTO, nor a nice '80 GTB that it was built on. It is just a "one off" Race Car. It is now listed at $102K. But was as high as the mid $100K range before.

But, me personally. If I was going to do it with a particular car, that has some light front Body damage, and needs it to be replaced anyway. Would probably just start out doing the Body only. It would be a cool Looking car, no doubt.

Rick, did you call on that car? And, check out those 2 places that Andreas posted the info. on, that sell the GTO Parts. You could probably do it yourself for not a whole lot of dough, Bro....:)

I think that car's purpose wasn't so much to replicate the 288GTO look as to be just a pure race car. And at 530 hp they have achieved that goal. Those air scoops and the rear wing are probably required to keep the beast on the ground and alive.

    Hi Haley.........

I'm ready to go big screen!

My vision in the good eye was getting so bad, that I couldn't even use the puter'.

I saw a retina specialist and my vision has improved.

Newspapers, books etc., my sight got so bad that I couldn't read even using a magnifying glass. :(

Is this the one that Fantasy Junction is advertising? http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/carintro.php?reqcardir=FE-288GTO-34555.

That's what I was talking about; not just a plastic body hung on a stock rolling chassis.

Whatever route one goes, it's best to have it done professionally. Otherwise, you'll probably end up with a misfitted, rattling piece of crap! We can't all do work like Chelle does, of course with the help of Haley and Kim!!

Haley, you girls have to come down to my place soon; its been a while.
