Anyone here ever run for or consider running for public office at the local level?

I figure that with the amount of accomplished users here there must be someone who has. I have always been intrigued with the idea and thought it would be fun to here some first hand stories!

How did you start into local politics, what position, population, etc?

I arrived in this area in 1972, when I was 20 years old, with very little. The area has been good to me. I wanted to give something back.
I am one of 5 elected directors of what is called a 'Special District', serving roughly 3000 residents.
In the heirarchy of politics, my board would rank just below a City Council. I am just finishing my second 4 year term.
The work is hard, but not overly time-consuming unless there are problems.
I would describe my work as 'entry-level' politics.
I wish more people would get involved in low-level work like mine--one thing our population lacks is a desire to participate; there is a willingness to let things be handled by others, which I view as kind of a cop-out. It is important to do more than just vote.
    Keith

p.s.--I will gladly elaborate further, particularly if I can encourage any others here to begin involvement in public office--at whatever level.

I'm interested in this kind of local politics too. I'm from Oregon and may go back there some day. Public office is something I'm interested in pursuing.

What do you do in particular?

I think it's more like "scratch my back while I steal your wallet... but hurry up because I only work 5 hours a day".

I am one of 5 directors serving on what is called a 'Community Services District' (the state defines this as a 'special' district). Ours is the largest such district in my county.
Simply put, we sell water for residential, commercial, and light industrial, for consumption and fire protection. It sounds easy, but can be plenty challenging. We also operate a community hall and a streetlight district.
Some other examples of 'special' districts/boards: Harbor districts; school board; hospital district; library district; flood control districts; bridge districts; etc.
If you return to Oregon, I wish you every success!

That's amazing, considering the fact that you communicate at a 4th grade level.

Not elected (yet) but I do work for Governor Bush here in Florida. I am still deciding what I should run for or if I want to do more behind the scenes work. I'm only 25 so I have some time.

How could you be expected to understand it if it were not on a fourth grade level?

not sure what you mean by "public office".

you mean an elected politician with no day job?

can't help you with that one.

but lots of municipalities have elected officials who don't get paid and don't work at it full time.

    what's your goal, exactly?

    doody.
