I had one back in 96/7 time frame. Great highway cruising car. Performance is now pretty slow by modern standards. But back when I had it, was pretty quick. Had a similar feel to my 91 460SEL (I still have this one), but faster off the line. It was fun to have a kid in some Japanese sports car, race you off the line and get beat by an 70's Mercedes sedan.

The Euro model does not have cats this have significantly more HP than the US model.
I was thinking about lightly tuning it with custom headers and exhaust, bigger brakes and wheels.

I would love one, but I would also considering a really good regular 450 SEL.

The suspension is better then a regular 450 SEL, stiffer and less boat like. Its a more modern feeling car. Mine was Euro spec, no cats. I've considered getting another one, but they are rare here and even in the states.

How much is the market price of 6.9 in the US? A good one condition 8 to 9 out of 10 ?

Last time I saw one in 9/10 condition was 2.5 years back for $100,000 with 12,000 miles.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but I'm kinda immune after maintaining 3 years classic ///M, a modern classic V12 bimmer and restoring a V12 Lambo tank in the past 2 years. Nothing surprises me anymore.

MBZ can't be worse than them ... I hope.

I thought Classic Mercedes parts are easy to get? At least You can get them, much better than Italian parts made from unobtanium.

The Mercedes Classic division in Irvine, CA has most of the parts in stock. What they don't have the German equal has them. Parts are not a problem. But since most times Mercedes is the only supplier, parts can be pricey.

Or maybe I'm tempted to buy a lower type SEL (280, 350) , swap the engine, gearbox and diff from W124 E50 or W210 E55, bigger brakes, etc. Should be fun.

    Bingo.

The air suspension cannot be cheap to fix.

With this car, you must buy the best mechanical and cosmetic car you can locate.

My mom used to drive a silver 1979 6.9 in 1980, when I was just a little kid. What an amazing car. It's still the "classic mercedes" that makes the sound of a vault closing when you shut the doors. The car was the fastest production sedan at the time. Truly amazing. Some of the late 79s or early 80s have abs as well. The hydraulic suspension is a pain in the arse, and the AC isn't great. I'm still a fan of these cars. I also like the 6.3 as well

yep I would go with the 6.3 too, but then the entry price on the 6.9 is way ebtter and its more subtle.

Course I figure the performnce today is nothing to write home about so a regular 450 woudl be almost as appealing to drive, as would a 300sel 3.5.
