O.K., I decided that now that Winter is Drawing near, and I will be spending most of my Driving time in my Conversion Van. I want to upgrade the Stereo. And was considering adding Satellite Radio, too.

The question....? Which one? Does anyone here have Satellite Radio? Which one do you have? And how do you like it? Lots of Choices? Price? Reception? ETC...?

I was thinking of going with Sirius, as, they have Howard Stern. And, you all should know by now that I have a wry, cynical sense of humor....:) But, aside from that, and much more important, really... ( Yes, I could easily live without hearing Stern, too.) I am really looking more for some great commercial free Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Radio, especially from some of new, Independent, Underground Metal Stations from around the World. I know there is a really good one out of Texas. And, there is some really great Metal coming out of Europe. So, if anyone has any thoughts or reccomendations, I would appreciate it!

Thanks for any help in advance!!!

i'll tell you this: my dad has xm in his car, and when we were up in chicago over the summer to watch my cards take on your cubs (yes, i know, i probably shouldn't have said that :)) we had a problem with reception in the city. between those tall buildings reception is pretty shady. other than that, it's great! we were listening to the comedy station the entire way from stl to chi, didn't have to worry about changing the station or anything. i'd say go for it, but beware of the reception issues. in tunnels as well it gets to be pretty tough. i still have no idea how u guys can drive in that traffic! i swear i will never be upset in st. louis traffic again :)

LOL! Thanks! No, I barely ever drive in the City at all. I hate traffic. But, on weeknights, driving in the city isn't too bad...

Yeah, really. The Traffic here.....I laugh my ass off at some of these geniuses that live out here....They live in a far Western Suburb like Naperville, but work Downtown. Mostly educated people, too! Sitting in traffic for an hour and a half EACH WAY, each and every day! That's 15 hours a week! More, if it Rains or Snows!!! I have much better things to do with my time than sit in crawling traffic every day! Hmmm.....Book smart, but no common sense!....;) And, all of the cars have one person in them. AND....there are several Train Lines that go from the far Western, South Western, and North Western suburbs that will take you right Downtown. If I worked Downtown, that would be what I would do, hands down!

But I am out in the Western 'Burbs. So, Tall Buildings and Overpasses won't be a problem.

Yes, Comedy stations. Blues stations. And, as mentioned, the Metal and Underground Music stations. That's what I want, with ZERO commercials! I do listen to alot of CD's, too.

How about any comparisons with XM and Sirius? As far as I know, either one would be O.K. And as I said, with maybe Howard being the only sway vote....That is, unless XM has a better selection of the Music that I like....

well, sirius i believe has more talk shows, i know xm does all of the baseball games whereas sirius does football...etc. other than that, i'm not quite sure, i would definitely check out the two's websites for channel listings. and my future guess is that within a few years they will be combined, so you'll get everything then. but that's not going to happen tommorow. yeah, we stayed out at a holiday inn express out by ohare while we were there, it took us 45 minutes easily to drive into the city, and parking is a whole other story. but hey, i will probably be back up in a couple of months to visit, i'm thinking about taking amtrak and finding a hotel downtown, sticking with public transit to make my way around, so look forward to another thread of advice! :)

Hey, Thanks alot! Yeah, I was thinking that too, (That they will probably end up being combined someday) It is like back when they had Beta and VHS. Both were O.K., and actually, the Betamax tapes were smaller and more compact. So I was kind of surprised that the VHS ended up "winning out".

I have checked both of their websites, and they both look pretty good. I just wanted some personal opinions. Thanks!

Also, if you stay at a Hotel near the Airport. They have the "L" train line that goes right there from O'Hare/Rosemont to Downtown. And it is funny, as you cruise along and see all of the Traffic stopped on I-90 headed in and out of Downtown. Any time. Any day. I just can't understand why more people do not take the public transportation here. It's Cheap. It's easy. It's usually pretty quick and efficient. Oh well....

    Hey Frank,

I've Sirius in my daily driver MB for almost a year now; it was part of a package with the car and the first six months was free otherwise I would not have bothered with it. When the free period was up I was lost without the service and had to sign up. Before having the service I was not a fan, but now I really like it. Sirius has a good mix of everything, I'm a Buffett fan so I spend a lot of time on Radio Margaritaville, but a good mix of music, talk and comedy.

Both XM and Sirius have a buffer, so that when you pass under a overpass or drive by a tall building you don't loose the signal, it's only when you stop that you'll loose it.

I had Sirius, wife had XM. Sirius has more selection of stations, from multiple versions of rock you seek to even local weather/traffic coverage. XM seemed more focused and less of an effort to provide a range of one type of music. One thing that is key would be your display. For the XM it showed nothing but the actual station (Nissan/Infiniti) whereas on Sirius, displayed record, date produced, channel, etc, (Dodge, Chrysler, Benz.) I think this is contributed to the stock display on your car and Im assuming you will have to get the attachment because it would be through your car's stock stereo? If that is the case, Sirius will still display more info and channels but not sure about XMs device.

A lot of businesses pump either through their workplace. Perhaps an idea for the go-karts? Regardless, best with both.

O.K. Thank you Gents VERY MUCH! It is looking like I will probably go with Sirius then. I am looking for a new satellite ready receiver that will just be able to handle it. A bigger Amp, and some better speakers to make my Van into a mini Aragon Ballroom....:) The stock system is "O.K." but with my previous life experience as a Heavy Metal guitarist, wanna be able to Crank it up! (Though, I do listen to everything from Classical, to Jazz,to smooth Jazz, to Blues, to Classic Rock, Rock, Punk, Metal, Industrial, etc... And have many CD's in each and all of those genres of Music.)

(No Hip Hop, Rap or Country though....:( )

One of THE BEST sounding systems that I ever had was the Bose Gold system that I had in 2 of my Corvettes. ( A '91 and a '95) That was the clearist, ballziest sound.

In my old Chevy van from back in the Late '70's, which we used to haul our Band equipment around in. It had Gold Shag carpeting all throughout. Walls, ceiling and even the floors....;) I had a Power inverter plugged into the cig lighter, and used my old Pioneer 100W "Home Unit", with 2 speaker cabs that one of my brothers made out of plywood, with a 15" Sunn Bass Bottom speaker in the Bottom. And a 12" a 10" and a Horn on top. The Cabs were about 4 1/2 feet tall, and about 2 feet sq. Painted black, with leopard print cloth over the front. We also used them as benches. But, man that stereo was LOUD!

    BTW....RB, did you move?

O.K., done. I am getting my new system, complete with Sirius, installed in the Morning. Thank you guys for your input. Much appreciated!

But, one thing that I wanted to pass along....While I was at Circuit City, I picked up season 3, 4 and 5 of "Magnum P.I." on DVD. (I already had seasons 1 & 2.) Just to let you know that they are out & available.

I've had both, and I'm keeping Sirius. I don't listen to Howard, but I listen to the other guys on his channel every day.

Try out Siriuis for free for 3 days at www.sirius.com Channel 27 is the metal channel. All music channels on Sirius are commercial free (unlike XM).

Thanks all for your input! I really appreciate it!

I got the new stereo and Sirius installed Thursday, and absolutely LOVE IT!!!!

I am now "Free from the clutches of E-Vil at last!!!!!" (Commercials, that is!)

Yeah, they have so many stations! Lots of Rock stations. Also, Blues & Jazz, which I like too. (even some Classical once in awhile!....:) )

Definitely made the right move! Shoulda done it sooner!

The price is $12.95 per Month. But I paid the whole year in advance, and it was only $88.95, and no monthly bill then. So, if anyone is going to get it, that would be the way to go.

I have both services, and slightly prefer Sirius. I don't listen to sports, and I prefer the jass stations on Sirius. XM has a better "Rave" station. Neither have good latin jazz. I listen to CNBC most of the time, and both services carry it. Reception for me is OK on both. Tall buildings will block either service. When traveling through the pine forest in NE California on the way to Pebble Beach in 2004, the Sirius service was cutting out a lot with the service plugged into my intercom system.
