Intriguing story of an abandoned MD87 at Madrid airport. Story also contains a link to 3 abandoned 747 cargo aircraft. Are disposal costs so excessive that abandonment is a better option?

Airport director Elena Mayoral submitted an official notice to the Boletín Oficial del Estado, the official gazette of the Kingdom of Spain, informing the nation of a plane in an "obvious state of abandonment" at the airport.
The plane is a McDonnell Douglas MD87, according to the notice, registration number EC KRV.

I know someone who will probably end up buying it, if it's cheap enough.

Usually airplanes in this situation are tied up with a lot of stuff swirling around them-- bankruptcies, loans, parking fees, cost to make them airworthy... and if this airplane was part of a fleet, you can count on the fact that every part on it will be due or overdue for overhaul.

The engines may be owned by someone else entirely, or have their own set of leases, bankruptcies, loans, fees, etc on them.
